The call

InsuranceDekho is growing fast by spending hard, while a bigger rival with the same license and a government-built marketplace both threaten the model it depends on.

InsuranceDekko helps people buy insurance through a network of 80,000 agents and a website. The problem is that PolicyBazaar does the exact same thing but already owns about 13 times more web traffic, and the Indian government just launched its own free insurance marketplace called Bima Sugam that is specifically designed to cut out middlemen like InsuranceDekko and take a smaller commission. On top of that, InsuranceDekko recently spent so much money on ads trying to compete that it swung from making ₹86 crores in profit to losing ₹47.5 crores, which shows the company cannot grow unless it burns cash. The one thing that could change the story is if the planned merger closes and the company goes public in March 2027, but that will put its messy tax case and unfinished government approval under public spotlight.

Why
01
AI pressure: Carrier-side AI underwriting and claims tools (Duck Creek, Shift Technology, Tractable). As insurers automate underwriting and claims with AI, they need aggregators less, squeezing the layer InsuranceDekho sits in. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: PolicyBazaar (PB Fintech). Same broking license, about 13 times the web traffic, and got its license months earlier, so it can copy InsuranceDekho's agent model at scale. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. An 80,000-agent distribution network and a composite broking license give it real reach that a website alone can't replicate overnight.
What would change this call
DRHP filed by end-September 2026 as targeted. Shows the IPO timeline is on track rather than slipping.
FY26 audited results show profit without another jump in ad spend. Would show organic demand rather than marketing-bought growth.
GST/DGGI case and RenewBuy IRDAI sign-off resolved before listing. Removes regulatory overhang that could derail the IPO.

  • Web traffic about 7.3% of PolicyBazaar's (2026-05-13)
Named risks
  • Bima Sugam, IRDAI-backed marketplace, could disintermediate the entire aggregator model. Severity: high

  • Carriers adopting AI-native underwriting directly (e.g. Duck Creek, April 2026), threatening aggregator layer. Severity: medium

Questions people ask
Is InsuranceDekho profitable in 2026?
InsuranceDekho swung to a net loss of ₹47.5 Cr in FY25 (from ₹85.7 Cr profit in FY24) after ad spend jumped 170% to ₹258.8 Cr, per Inc42 on 2025-09-12. The company's own Annual Report 2026 claims the post-merger FY26 combined entity reached operational profitability, an unverified vendor claim.
Who owns InsuranceDekho?
GirnarSOFT, the parent of CarDekho Group, holds roughly 49.8% equity in InsuranceDekho as of December 4, 2025, per Inc42's captable data. Goldman Sachs Asset Management and TVS Capital Funds are the top institutional investors; founders collectively hold about 1.0%.
Is InsuranceDekho merging with RenewBuy?
Yes. InsuranceDekho signed a share-swap merger framework with RenewBuy on May 12, 2025, valuing the combined entity at ₹7,400 Cr (~$890M). The Competition Commission of India cleared it on November 7, 2025, and by July 2026 it had initial IRDAI clearance with an IPO targeted by March 31, 2027.
Who is InsuranceDekho's biggest competitor?
PolicyBazaar (PB Fintech) is the dominant rival, holding the same IRDAI composite broking licence (obtained Feb 2024, ahead of InsuranceDekho's July 2024) and drawing roughly 13.7 times InsuranceDekho's web traffic per SimilarWeb data dated 2026-05-13, with an estimated 90-93% online insurance market share.
Could AI replace InsuranceDekho?
Not directly, since InsuranceDekho holds an IRDAI composite broking licence (July 2024) that AI tools cannot independently hold, and relies on an 80,000-agent human distribution network (vendor-claimed). But carrier-side agentic underwriting tools like Duck Creek's platform, launched April 28, 2026, threaten to disintermediate the aggregator layer from the supply side.
Is InsuranceDekho under any investigation?
Yes. India's GST Intelligence unit (DGGI) raided InsuranceDekho's Gurugram headquarters in January 2025 over alleged tax evasion and fake invoicing tied to invoices from 2018 through March 2022, per Inc42 reporting dated 2025-01-10. The case's resolution remained unconfirmed as of July 2026.
