The call

IOI's owned IP and Bond license keep competitors out, but Xbox's exit from Project Fantasy funding leaves it self-financing a costly online RPG with no safety net.

IO Interactive makes video games, most famously the Hitman series (which it owns) and the new James Bond game (which it licenses from Amazon MGM). It is hard for other studios to copy these games because IO Interactive owns the Hitman name outright and has exclusive rights to make Bond games, meaning competitors cannot legally make the same products. However, IO Interactive just lost its financial backer, Microsoft, and now must fund its next big game (a role-playing game called Project Fantasy) on its own, this is risky because big online RPGs fail often and cost enormous amounts of money to make. The one thing that could change everything is whether Project Fantasy actually works and makes money, or whether IO Interactive runs out of cash before it launches.

Why
01
AI pressure: Generative AI production tools (art/code/QA workflows). IOI skipped GenAI on 007 First Light, but industry-wide adoption could undercut its craft-driven cost base over time. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Amazon MGM (Bond IP owner). Amazon MGM could pull Bond publishing in-house after First Light, taking IOI's cut of any sequel. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. Owns Hitman outright and holds an exclusive Bond game license, both blocking rivals from cloning its two core products.
What would change this call
Amazon MGM announces in-house publishing for the next Bond game instead of IOI self-publishing. Would show IOI losing control over its most valuable non-owned IP.
Project Fantasy misses a 2026-2027 preview or playable reveal. Would show self-funded RPG scope is straining IOI's cash reserves.
Hitman Classic Trilogy Remastered ships on schedule in 2027 with strong sales. Would show IOI's owned IP still generates reliable cash to offset Bond and Fantasy risk.
