The call

Iveco's own numbers are weakening, but Tata Motors' pending acquisition, not any product edge, is what decides whether it competes past 2027.

Iveco builds heavy trucks and sells them mainly in Europe through a network of dealers. It is hard to replace because truck buyers trust established dealers, trucks need government approvals to sell legally, and the company owns factories and financing arms. However, Iveco is smaller than rivals Daimler, Volvo, and TRATON, which means they can spend more on new engines and electric trucks and undercut prices. The big question is whether Tata Motors, the new owner, will spend enough money and skill to help Iveco compete or if the company will slowly lose customers and profit to its larger rivals over the next few years.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI is not the pressure here; autonomous trucking (PlusAI partnership) is a future bet, not a current threat or lifeline. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Daimler Truck, Volvo Group, TRATON (MAN/Scania). Iveco holds 12% EU truck share against Daimler's 19%, Volvo's 15%, MAN's 14%, Scania's 14%: smallest of the majors. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Dealer network, type-approval certifications, and factories that took decades to build, now backed by Tata Motors capital.

Questions people ask
Is Iveco Group profitable in 2026?
Iveco swung to an adjusted net loss of €74m in Q1 2026, versus a €60m profit a year earlier (reported 2026-05-31). FY2025 adjusted net income was €312m, down from €520m in FY2024, showing a clear profitability decline heading into the Tata takeover.
Is Tata Motors buying Iveco Group?
Yes. Tata Motors agreed on 2025-07-30 to acquire Iveco Group via an all-cash tender offer at €14.1/share (~€3.8bn equity value). The deal was delayed from Q2 to Q3 2026 for EU regulatory approvals, with Tata's chairman saying in June 2026 it should close by Q2 FY27.
Could AI replace Iveco truck drivers?
Iveco is testing this directly: on 2026-01-12 it launched a Level 4 autonomous trucking pilot with PlusAI on a ~300km Madrid-Zaragoza corridor with logistics firm Sesé, still using a safety operator on board through multi-year testing starting 2026, not full driver replacement yet.
Who is Iveco Group's biggest competitor?
Daimler Truck AG leads the EU heavy-truck market with 19% share versus Iveco's 12% as of 2024 data (ICCT report, 2025-09-09). Volvo Trucks (15%), MAN and Scania (14% each) also outrank Iveco, which ranks fifth among major European OEMs.
Will Iveco Group remain a publicly listed company?
Not for much longer. Tata Motors' tender offer at €14.1/share is expected to close by Q3 2026 (per Iveco, 2026-05-07 guidance) or Q2 FY27 (per Tata, 2026-06-29), after which Iveco Group would become a Tata subsidiary and delist from Borsa Italiana/Euronext Milan.
What happened to Iveco's Defence business?
Iveco Group sold its Defence unit (ASTRA, IDV brands) to Leonardo S.p.A.; the sale completed on 2026-03-18 for a final price of €1.6bn, transferring about 2,000 employees. The unit had generated €1.368bn in 2025 revenue before the sale.
