The call

Jerry makes real money brokering insurance across all 50 states, but its edge is shared with Insurify and The Zebra, and AI-run shopping surfaces could flatten all three into interchangeable plugins.

Jerry helps customers compare and buy insurance online and makes money by connecting them to insurance companies. It is hard to replace because it needs licenses in all 50 states and deals with many insurance companies, but so do its rivals Insurify, The Zebra, and Policygenius, which means none of them has a real advantage. The bigger threat is that ChatGPT and other AI apps are becoming the place where people shop for insurance instead of opening Jerry's app, and Jerry cannot control how ChatGPT ranks insurance options or whether people even know Jerry exists there. When insurance rates got tight in 2022, Jerry's customers stopped seeing big savings, so the company cut staff and lost 37 percent of its policies in three months, which shows how fast things can fall apart. The one thing that could change the picture is whether Jerry can stay its own app that people choose to open, or whether it shrinks into just one option buried inside ChatGPT and ranked by an algorithm Jerry does not control.

Why
01
AI pressure: OpenAI ChatGPT apps directory. If quoting moves inside ChatGPT, Jerry becomes one ranked plugin among many instead of the destination app. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Progressive, GEICO, State Farm, Allstate. Carriers could ship native AI quoting that binds policies directly, cutting Jerry out of the transaction entirely. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. 50-state broker licenses and carrier integrations that took years to build, though rivals like Insurify have the same shield.
What would change this call
Outcome of Insurify v. Jerry patent and trademark suit (D. Mass. 1:2026cv11824). Settlement or injunction would signal IP weakness; dismissal would signal Jerry's model is defensible.
Whether Jerry keeps or loses top placement in OpenAI's ChatGPT-apps directory versus Insurify or The Zebra. Shows if Jerry controls its own distribution or depends on a ranking algorithm it doesn't own.
Whether Jerry closes a new priced funding round after its last raise in August 2023. A new raise would signal investor confidence and runway; continued absence would signal stalled growth.

Questions people ask
Is Jerry profitable in 2026?
Jerry states on its Y Combinator company page that it has been profitable since 2024, with total funding raised of $240M+. This is a company claim, not independently audited, and no new funding round has been reported since the August 2023 Series C extension.
Who owns Jerry the insurance app?
Jerry is privately held and venture-backed, founded in 2017 by Art Agrawal, Lina Zhang, and Musawir Shah. Its last disclosed funding was an August 2023 Series C extension, holding a roughly $450M valuation set in August 2021 when Goodwater Capital led a $75M round.
Could AI replace Jerry's insurance comparison app?
Jerry's core quote-matching task is exactly what generalist AI agents can perform, and in February 2026 Jerry itself launched GarageGuard inside ChatGPT via OpenAI's Apps SDK. Its 50-state broker license lets it legally bind policies, something a plain chatbot cannot do without one.
Who is Jerry's biggest competitor?
Insurify is Jerry's closest rival, claiming 120+ insurer partners versus Jerry's 100+, and the two are in active federal litigation: Jerry Services Inc. v. Insurify, Inc., filed April 20, 2026 in Massachusetts, amended June 9, 2026.
Has Jerry had layoffs?
Yes. Coverager reported that in January 2023 Jerry cut 13% of staff (about 36 employees) after policies sold fell 37% quarter over quarter, as carriers tightened underwriting and rates rose, undercutting Jerry's savings pitch.
How many customers does Jerry have?
Jerry's own site states it has served 5M+ customers as of July 2026, up from about 1M in 2021 and 4M in 2023, alongside 4M+ App Store downloads and 1M+ Google Play installs.
