The call

JioMart cannot be starved of capital by Reliance, but its 2-hour delivery model is still losing the speed race to Blinkit and Zepto in dense cities.

JioMart delivers groceries and everyday items in 2 hours using hybrid stores, owned by Reliance Retail, India's largest retailer. It is hard for JioMart to catch up because faster competitors like Blinkit and Zepto deliver in 10 minutes using dark stores (warehouses hidden from customers) in busy city areas, and JioMart is losing money while trying to keep up. The one thing that could change everything is whether JioMart's 2-hour model can somehow become profitable enough and fast enough to compete in major cities over the next year, or whether Reliance decides to shut it down and focus resources elsewhere.

Why
01
AI pressure: AI shopping agents like ChatGPT and Google Gemini that could bypass marketplace apps for product search and ordering. If shoppers ask AI agents to just order milk or a phone charger, JioMart's app and search page get skipped entirely. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Blinkit, Zepto, and Swiggy Instamart in quick commerce. These three hold roughly 93% of Indian quick commerce orders via 10-minute dark stores while JioMart sits near 2% with a slower 2-hour model. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. Reliance Retail's ₹3.7 lakh crore revenue base, 20,000+ physical stores, and Jio's 396 million registered JioMart customers fund the fight.
What would change this call
JioMart's quick-commerce market share stays near 2% for two more quarters. Would show the 2-hour hybrid model is not closing the gap with 10-minute rivals.
EBITDA margin remains below 8% in Q2 and Q3 FY27 results. Would show cash burn from quick-commerce competition is not stabilizing.
Reliance publicly scales back or delays JioMart dark-store expansion targets. Would show parent company deprioritizing the quick-commerce push.

Questions people ask
Is JioMart profitable in 2026?
Not improving: Reliance Retail's Q1 FY27 (June quarter 2026) PAT fell 14.2% YoY to ₹2,806 crore and EBITDA margin compressed to 7.9%, both attributed to heavy quick-commerce investment spending, as of 2026-07-17.
Who owns JioMart?
JioMart is owned by Reliance Retail Ltd, under Reliance Retail Ventures Ltd (RRVL), ultimately controlled by publicly traded Reliance Industries Ltd. Outside investors like Qatar Investment Authority hold minority RRVL stakes, having invested $1 billion for ~1% at a $100 billion valuation on 2023-08-23.
Is Blinkit beating JioMart in quick commerce?
Yes. Per 2025 market-share data reported 2026-07-17, Blinkit held 47% of India's quick-commerce market, Zepto 24%, Swiggy Instamart 22%, while JioMart shared the remaining roughly 7% with Flipkart Minutes, Amazon Now and BigBasket combined.
Could AI replace JioMart's business?
No. JioMart CEO Sandeep Varaganti said on 2026-06-26 that AI should 'reason but never lead,' using it to accelerate micro-market expansion and marketing decisions, while the core advantage remains its 20,000+ physical store network AI cannot replicate.
Will Reliance Retail IPO soon?
No firm date exists. At the RIL AGM on 2026-06-19, Mukesh Ambani gave no timeline for a Reliance Retail IPO, prioritizing the Jio Platforms IPO (DRHP filed, valuation estimated ₹11-12 lakh crore) first.
How big is JioMart's quick-commerce footprint?
As of 2026-07-20, JioMart's quick-commerce network spanned over 3,100 physical stores, 600+ dedicated dark stores, more than 1,200 cities, and roughly 5,100 to 5,500 pin codes across India.
