The call

Kakao Enterprise is growing and losing less money, but it competes against faster domestic clouds and cheaper AI models while its parent keeps changing its leadership.

Kakao Enterprise sells cloud computing and customer service chatbots to Korean businesses. It is hard to replace because Korean companies must keep their data inside Korea by law, and Kakao Enterprise has that ability. However, every other Korean cloud company (Naver, KT, Samsung SDS) offers the exact same legal protection, so there is nothing special about Kakao Enterprise. On top of that, new AI programs from other companies can now do what Kakao Enterprise's chatbots do, and Kakao's parent company is spending money on other projects instead. The one thing that could change this is if Kakao Enterprise starts making money and growing faster than its rivals within the next year, or if the company gets spun off as its own separate business so investors can buy it directly.

Why
01
AI pressure: Naver HyperCLOVA X, Upstage Solar, and frontier LLMs like GPT-4 and Gemini. These models can handle chatbot and CS work directly, cutting out the middleware layer Kakao Enterprise sells. Could AI do the core job? Yes, likely.
02
Bigger players: Naver Cloud, KT Cloud, and Samsung SDS. All three run live Korean cloud platforms claiming the same data residency pitch, and KT Cloud reported 20 to 42 percent quarterly growth in 2025. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Korean data residency rules keep foreign clouds like AWS and Azure from fully displacing domestic providers, though Kakao shares this protection with every local rival.
What would change this call
Kakao's Q2/Q3 2026 earnings show whether operating loss narrows without DKT consolidation help. Tests if Kakao Enterprise's growth is organic or an accounting artifact of its sister firm.
Whether new CEO Lee Jae-han remains in post through mid-2027. Would show leadership stability after three CEO changes in 18 months.
Whether the CryptoLab homomorphic-encryption product ships as a deployed offering by late 2026. Would show Kakao Enterprise gaining a product no domestic rival currently has.
