The call

Kidaptive stopped existing as an independent bet in 2021; what remains is a data-science team inside McGraw Hill's much larger, slower-moving publishing business.

Kidaptive made personalized learning software for kids, but McGraw Hill acquired it in March 2021, so there is no independent Kidaptive to invest in anymore. The real question is whether to join McGraw Hill, which sells textbooks and learning tools to public schools and has strong relationships with districts that make it hard for new competitors like Khan Academy's AI tutor to replace overnight, but McGraw Hill is a large, mature company with slower growth than a startup. The one thing that matters: whether McGraw Hill actually ships and keeps funding its new AI writing tools (Actively Learn and Achieve3000) or lets them sit unused on the shelf.

Why
01
AI pressure: Khanmigo and frontier-lab AI tutors (OpenAI, Anthropic, Google). McGraw Hill built its own GenAI writing tools instead of getting replaced, but AI tutors still chase the same classroom budgets. Could AI do the core job? Yes, likely.
02
Bigger players: McGraw Hill. McGraw Hill already owns Kidaptive outright since March 2021; there is no separate company left to threaten. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. McGraw Hill's existing district sales relationships and FERPA/COPPA compliance history keep buyers from switching to unproven AI-native tools.
What would change this call
McGraw Hill publishes independent efficacy data for its GenAI Writing Assistant within two adoption cycles. Would show the legacy Kidaptive tech is still prioritized, not shelved.
Dylan Arena departs or is reassigned from McGraw Hill's Chief Data Science and AI Officer role. Would signal deprioritization of the former Kidaptive team inside McGraw Hill.
Districts publicly switch curriculum contracts from McGraw Hill to Khan Academy Khanmigo or similar AI-native platforms. Would show direct customer loss to AI-native tutoring rivals.

Questions people ask
Is Kidaptive still an independent company in 2026?
No. Kidaptive was acquired by McGraw Hill on March 16, 2021, and its team was absorbed into the publisher. As of a July 15, 2026 check, kidaptive.com redirects to McGraw Hill, confirming there is no standalone Kidaptive entity, revenue, or product roadmap today.
Who owns Kidaptive now?
McGraw Hill (NYSE: MH) owns Kidaptive, having acquired it on March 16, 2021 per McGraw Hill's own press release. Acquisition terms were not publicly disclosed, and Kidaptive functions as absorbed IP and personnel inside McGraw Hill, not a separate business unit.
Can I get startup equity by joining Kidaptive?
No. Since the March 2021 McGraw Hill acquisition, Kidaptive has zero independent cap table. Anyone considering joining would actually be joining McGraw Hill and receiving mature-company RSUs, not founder-stage startup equity.
Could AI replace what Kidaptive built?
Kidaptive's core psychometric/adaptive-sequencing tech is already being reimplemented via generative AI. McGraw Hill, its owner, launched its own GenAI Writing Assistant in Actively Learn and Achieve3000 on August 21, 2024, effectively superseding the standalone adaptive-learning model.
What happened to Kidaptive's founders?
Co-founder Dylan Arena, a Stanford learning scientist, now serves as McGraw Hill's Chief Data Science and AI Officer, a title confirmed in McGraw Hill's August 21, 2024 press release announcing new generative AI tools for K-12 and higher-ed platforms.
How much funding did Kidaptive raise before its acquisition?
Kidaptive raised at least a $10.1M Series B in November 2013 led by Formation 8, and a $19.1M Series C in February 2018 led by Formation 8 and Woongjin ThinkBig that valued the company at roughly $50M post-money, before McGraw Hill acquired it in March 2021.
