The call

L&T's defence unit keeps winning artillery and rocket contracts while it waits to see if it lands the AMCA fighter deal or gets squeezed out of India's next big weapons program.

Larsen & Toubro's defence unit builds military ships, armoured vehicles, and weapons systems for the Indian government. It is hard to replace because the Indian government requires defence companies to be local, the military has spent decades qualifying L&T's factories and processes, and competitors like Tata or Bharat Forge would need years to build similar production facilities. The big question ahead is whether L&T can win the contract to build India's next-generation fighter jet (decision around late 2026 or early 2027), and more importantly, whether it can develop drones and AI-powered weapons systems before foreign or Chinese companies make those technologies standard around the world.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI-driven drones and autonomous targeting are reshaping global warfare, but L&T has no flagship autonomous weapons product yet. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Tata Advanced Systems and Bharat Forge-BEML. Both consortia are shortlisted against L&T-BEL for the AMCA fifth-gen fighter contract, with a decision due by late FY27. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. India's Atmanirbhar Bharat policy bars foreign rivals, and decades of DRDO and MoD qualification make L&T's production base hard to replicate fast.
What would change this call
AMCA fifth-gen fighter award decision, expected Q4 FY27. Would show whether L&T-BEL or rivals Tata/Bharat Forge-BEML secure the next major platform program.
Defence Procurement Board approval of 300-unit K9 Vajra tranche (~₹23,000 crore), pending mid-2026. Would confirm whether L&T retains its sole-supplier position on the howitzer program.
Any private peer shipping a flagship autonomous or unmanned-systems platform adopted by MoD. Would show whether L&T is losing ground on next-generation autonomous defence spending.

Questions people ask
Is L&T Defence (Precision Engineering & Systems) profitable?
L&T Precision Engineering & Systems is a business unit inside profitable, publicly traded Larsen & Toubro Limited, not separately listed. The segment posted revenue of Rs 6,185 crore in FY2024-25, up 31.8% year on year, with order inflow of Rs 13,326 crore, up 28.9%, as of March 31, 2025.
Who owns L&T Precision Engineering & Systems?
It is wholly owned as a business unit of Larsen & Toubro Limited, an Indian conglomerate listed on NSE and BSE with a market capitalization of about Rs 5.21 lakh crore as of July 24, 2026. There is no separate equity or ownership structure for the defence unit itself.
Could AI replace L&T's defence manufacturing business?
No. L&T's moat is government-mandated indigenization policy, decades of DRDO/MoD qualification, and irreplaceable fixed assets like the Hazira Armoured Systems Complex and Kattupalli shipyard, not software workflows. The longer-term watch item is AI-enabled autonomous drones and targeting systems, where L&T has no flagship product yet as of mid-2026.
Who is L&T Defence's biggest competitor?
Tata Advanced Systems and Bharat Forge are L&T's closest private-sector rivals, both shortlisted alongside L&T-BEL in the May 27, 2026 AMCA fighter RFP after state-owned HAL was excluded from that phase. L&T and Spain's Navantia also lost the Project-75(I) submarine bid to rivals in January 2025.
What is L&T's role in India's AMCA fighter jet program?
L&T formed a consortium with Bharat Electronics Limited, later joined by Dynamatic Technologies, to bid for the roughly Rs 15,000 crore AMCA fifth-generation fighter prototype program. The Ministry of Defence issued a formal RFP to this consortium on May 27, 2026, alongside Tata Advanced Systems and Bharat Forge-BEML, after excluding HAL.
Did L&T lose any major defence contracts recently?
Yes. The Ministry of Defence rejected L&T's joint bid with Spain's Navantia for the Project-75(I) submarine program on technical grounds in January 2025, marking a setback even as L&T continued winning K9 Vajra howitzer and Pinaka rocket-launcher upgrade contracts through 2025 and early 2026.
