The call

LATAM controls its home turf through law and infrastructure, not tech, so the real risks are fuel costs and an open Brazilian antitrust case, not AI or Silicon Valley.

LATAM is the biggest airline in Latin America, carrying nearly twice as many passengers as its closest competitor. It is hard to compete with because Latin American governments limit who can fly certain routes, and LATAM controls the main airports in Brazil, Peru, and Chile. However, the company just came out of bankruptcy a few years ago, fuel prices can suddenly cut into profits, and Brazil's government is investigating whether LATAM and Gol (another airline) were illegally agreeing on ticket prices. If Brazil forces LATAM to give up routes or reduce its market power, the company's special advantage disappears.

Why
01
AI pressure: AI trip-planning agents (Google, ChatGPT-style booking tools). AI booking agents could push fares toward bare comparison, squeezing direct-channel margins, but nobody flies a plane for you. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Delta Air Lines (joint-venture partner with its own Latin America ambitions). Delta's codeshare and equity ties give it leverage to redirect connecting traffic away from LATAM's hubs over time. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. Cabotage laws, government-granted slots, and hub control in São Paulo, Lima, and Santiago keep foreign carriers out of domestic routes.
What would change this call
Brazil's CADE issues a ruling or forced remedy in the LATAM-Gol pricing collusion proceeding. Would show whether regulators can crack LATAM's 38.6% home-market dominance.
LATAM's quarterly fuel cost line and net leverage figure in Q2-Q3 2026 filings versus the 1.8x FY2026 target. Would show whether fuel shocks are eroding the record margins and reopening refinancing risk.
Embraer E195-E2 deliveries and route deployment progress reported through H2 2026 earnings calls. Would show whether LATAM executes fleet expansion smoothly or hits delays that cede routes to Gol/Azul.

Questions people ask
Is LATAM Airlines profitable in 2026?
Yes. LATAM reported Q1 2026 net income of $576 million on revenue of $4.08-4.15 billion, up about 21.7% year over year, with a record adjusted operating margin of 19.8%, as of May 5, 2026, per its own investor relations release.
Who owns LATAM Airlines Group?
As of June 2026, major shareholders are Sixth Street Partners (~20.1%), Strategic Value Partners (~11.5%), Delta Air Lines (~10.0-10.57%), Qatar Airways (~10.0-10.56%), and the founding Cueto Group (~5.0%), following LATAM's 2022 Chapter 11 restructuring that wiped out prior equity.
Could AI replace LATAM Airlines?
No. LATAM's moat rests on air operator certificates, government route/slot rights, cabotage laws, and physical hub infrastructure in Sao Paulo, Lima and Santiago. AI tools like its 'Emily' contact-center system (unveiled AWS re:Invent, November 2024) automate service tasks but do not substitute for these regulatory and physical assets.
Who is LATAM Airlines' biggest competitor?
Regionally, Avianca Group is the closest rival but carried only about 37 million passengers in 2025 versus LATAM's 87.4 million. In Brazil's domestic market, Gol and Azul compete directly; LATAM held 38.6% domestic share there in 2025 versus Gol's roughly 33%.
What is LATAM Airlines' market share in Brazil?
LATAM led Brazil's domestic airline market with 38.6% passenger share in 2025, as the market surpassed 100 million domestic passengers for the first time, according to a July 8, 2026 report citing Brazil's ANAC data.
Why is Brazil's CADE investigating LATAM Airlines?
Brazil's antitrust regulator CADE opened a proceeding in April 2026 alleging pricing collusion between LATAM Brasil and Gol on domestic routes. A materially adverse outcome, such as forced divestitures or capacity caps, is flagged as a key risk to LATAM's dominant 38.6% Brazil market share.
