The call

The classifieds business still runs deep and wide, but three CEOs, €4.5B in debt, and Vinted eating fashion show the real fight is inside the company, not against AI.

Leboncoin is France's main website for buying and selling used stuff, cars, and services, with nearly half of French people using it. It is hard to replace because so many people already use it and trust it, though Facebook Marketplace and AI chatbots like ChatGPT could eventually chip away at this by making it easier to find items elsewhere. The big question is whether the private equity owner will sell the company or try to turn it around, since the company has changed leaders three times in two years and carries billions in debt, which could hurt its ability to invest and compete.

Why
01
AI pressure: ChatGPT-mediated shopping and general AI commerce discovery. Leboncoin fed its 89M listings into ChatGPT rather than get scraped blind, but AI-run discovery could eventually pull buyers off the site entirely. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Facebook Marketplace (Meta). Meta was just forced by an EU fine into a Marketplace Partner Program; watch if it ships France-specific dealer tools next. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. 45% of France uses it monthly, 89M listings create liquidity, and courts have upheld its right to block scrapers.
What would change this call
Leboncoin autos or real estate listings volume drops while a specialist rival's volume rises. would show vertical unbundling spreading beyond fashion into crown-jewel categories.
Meta ships France-specific dealer tools inside Facebook Marketplace within a year. would show Meta directly targeting Leboncoin's core auto/dealer revenue base.
Leboncoin is sold, IPO'd, or undergoes further debt restructuring within 12 months. would confirm PE ownership and €4.5B debt are forcing an exit or value-destroying cuts.

Questions people ask
Is Leboncoin profitable in 2026?
Leboncoin does not disclose net profit publicly, but CEO Antoine Jouteau stated revenue grew 10% to €550 million in 2024. Its parent Adevinta carries a record €4.5 billion private credit loan from the 2023 Permira/Blackstone buyout, as reported June 2026.
Who owns Leboncoin?
Leboncoin is owned by Adevinta, which was taken private in November 2023 by a Permira and Blackstone-led consortium (with General Atlantic, TCV, CPP Investments, GIC) valuing Adevinta at roughly €14 billion, backed by a €4.5 billion private credit loan reported June 2026.
Could AI replace Leboncoin?
Unlikely soon: Leboncoin licensed its own listings data to ChatGPT on its own terms (reported February 2026) rather than being scraped, and won €250,000 in April 2026 against aggregator Jinka for database scraping, showing its data and legal rights AI systems cannot bypass.
Is Vinted a bigger threat to Leboncoin than Facebook Marketplace?
Vinted became France's top clothing retailer by sales volume in 2025, pulling the fashion vertical away from Leboncoin, while Facebook Marketplace remains contested after the EU fined Meta about €798 million in November 2024 for abusive Marketplace practices.
Is it risky to join Leboncoin right now given leadership changes?
Leboncoin has had three CEOs in about two years: Antoine Jouteau, interim executive chairman Jacob Aqraou, then Kieren Cooney, appointed around June 2026 and explicitly tasked with reorganizing the company, signaling ongoing organizational instability.
Is Leboncoin for sale?
In December 2024, then-CEO Antoine Jouteau said a sale of Leboncoin 'could be a possibility' but was 'not a subject for now.' As of July 2026 it remains under Adevinta ownership, though PE debt and a reorg mandate keep exit speculation alive.
