The call

MACOM is growing fast and profitably on AI-driven optics demand, but bigger rivals already ship competing chips and the stock now prices in near-flawless execution.

MACOM designs and manufactures semiconductor chips used in military radar systems and the fiber-optic cables that connect AI data centers together. The company is hard to replace in defense work because it builds its own factories, follows strict U.S. security rules, and has long-term contracts with the Pentagon. But in the faster-growing AI data-center business, it competes directly against much larger companies like Broadcom and Marvell, which already dominate the market and have spent billions on the same technology. The biggest risk is that NVIDIA or other chip makers decide to build their own optical components instead of buying from outside suppliers, which would cut out MACOM and others like it. The stock price assumes everything goes perfectly, which leaves little room for disappointment.

Why
01
AI pressure: NVIDIA/hyperscaler in-house optics. AI feeds MACOM today via optical chips for data centers, but AI buyers may build their own optics and cut it out. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Broadcom, Marvell, Coherent Corp. Broadcom holds most of the PAM4 DSP market; Marvell shipped 1.6T coherent DSPs; Coherent competes directly on 1.6T lasers and transceivers. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. In-house fabs, ITAR-cleared defense supply chain, and sticky design wins that are costly for customers to re-qualify away from.
What would change this call
MACOM's Aug 6, 2026 Q3 results versus its >60% Data Center growth guidance. Would show whether hyperscaler optics demand is still flowing to MACOM as projected.
Public disclosure of NVIDIA or a hyperscaler shipping in-house laser/photodetector components. Would show vertical integration is pulling volume away from merchant suppliers like MACOM.
Named 1.6T design-socket wins announced by Marvell or Coherent Corp at OFC or earnings calls. Would show whether coherent DSP rivals are displacing MACOM's IMDD-based components.
Key numbers
  • FY2025 revenue $967.3M, up 32.6% YoY (2025-10-03)
  • Q2 FY2026 book to bill hit record 1.5:1 (2026-04-03)
  • Cash and short-term investments $664.9M (2026-04-03)
Named risks
  • IMDD vs coherent DSP architecture contest at 1.6T could erode MACOM's Data Center share. Severity: high
  • NVIDIA or hyperscalers vertically integrating optics could pull volume from merchant suppliers. Severity: medium
  • Stock priced at over 120x trailing P/E, highly sensitive to any guidance miss. Severity: medium
  • CHIPS Act $70M funding remains non-binding preliminary memorandum as of January 2025. Severity: medium
  • Telecom/LEO satellite program ramp repeatedly pushed out, most recently to calendar 2027. Severity: medium

Questions people ask
Is MACOM Technology Solutions profitable in 2026?
Yes. MACOM's FY2025 (ended Oct 3, 2025) revenue was $967.3M, up 32.6% YoY, with GAAP operating income of $129.7M and adjusted operating income of $245.7M (25.4% of revenue). Q2 FY2026 revenue reached $289M, up 22.5% YoY, with record 1.5:1 book-to-bill.
Who is MACOM's biggest competitor?
Broadcom and Marvell together hold over 90% of the high-end PAM4 DSP market as of June 2026, dominating the DSP layer adjacent to MACOM's optics components. Coherent Corp directly competes in 1.6T lasers and transceivers, having demonstrated 1.6T-DR8 transceivers at OFC2025 (March 2025).
Could AI replace MACOM Technology Solutions?
No. MACOM manufactures physical RF, microwave and photonic semiconductors (GaAs, GaN, InP, SiPh) via in-house fabs; AI software cannot replace physical chip fabrication. MACOM is instead an AI-buildout beneficiary, supplying optical components for data-center interconnects, with Q2 FY2026 Data Center revenue of $98.2M.
Who owns MACOM Technology Solutions?
MACOM is an independent publicly traded company with no parent, listed on Nasdaq under ticker MTSI, with market capitalization fluctuating between roughly $17B and $26B across fiscal 2025 to 2026, reported at approximately $21.56B as of July 23, 2026.
Will MACOM get its CHIPS Act funding?
As of January 14, 2025, the US Department of Commerce signed only a preliminary, non-binding memorandum of terms for up to $70M in direct CHIPS Act funding toward MACOM's ~$345M five-year capital plan for its Lowell, MA and Durham, NC fabs; a definitive agreement remained pending as of this report.
Is MACOM's data center business growing fast?
Yes. Q2 FY2026 Data Center segment revenue was $98.2M (quarter ended April 3, 2026), and management raised its FY2026 Data Center growth base case from 35-40% to over 60%, announced May 7, 2026, citing record bookings and backlog.
