The call

A company once valued at $7 billion has gone quiet for five years while Meituan builds the same business with deeper pockets.

Meicai delivers food and ingredients to about two million restaurants across China by running its own warehouses and last-mile delivery network. The company built real physical advantages like farmer relationships and local delivery teams, but Meituan, a giant tech company, launched Kuailv to do the same thing with way more money and already-existing ties to those same restaurants, making it very hard for Meicai to stay ahead. The one thing that could change everything is if Meicai raises new funding, goes public, gets bought out, or releases new numbers proving it is still growing, since five years of silence in the news (after layoffs and a canceled IPO in 2021) suggests the company has been shrinking.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. No AI agent yet automates restaurant produce ordering at scale in China; threat would come via a rival's procurement bot, not a direct AI product. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Meituan (via its Kuailv restaurant-supply arm). Kuailv already sells wholesale food to restaurants with Meituan's cash, delivery fleet, and existing merchant relationships. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Warehouses, cold-chain trucks, and direct contracts with farmers built up since 2014 across 300+ cities.
What would change this call
Meicai files a refiled IPO (HK or A-share) with audited financials by end of 2026. Would show the company has regained growth and investor confidence after its 2021 stall.
Meituan Kuailv announces expanded warehousing or restaurant-supply coverage in 2025 to 2026. Would confirm Meituan is actively pressing into Meicai's core distribution turf.
A new funding round or acquisition of Meicai is reported by primary press through 2026. Would reveal whether the 2018 $7B valuation still holds or has fallen.
Key numbers
  • $7B valuation set in Series F round (2018-10)
  • Served over 2 million restaurants in 300+ cities (2021-05)
  • Cut at least 50% of staff in several HQ teams (2021-09)
Named risks
  • Meituan's Kuailv arm competes directly with more capital and existing restaurant relationships. Severity: high
  • Five-year absence of primary press coverage since 2021 makes current operating status unverifiable. Severity: high
  • No confirmed funding round since October 2018 despite an $7B valuation still being cited. Severity: medium
  • 2021 IPO plans (U.S. and Hong Kong) were both shelved with no confirmed refiling since. Severity: medium
  • Sector-wide fresh-grocery consolidation (e.g., Missfresh's decline) signals a difficult funding and competitive environment. Severity: medium

Questions people ask
Is Meicai profitable in 2026?
Unclear. A secondary blog claims Meicai reached breakeven in December 2024 after restructuring, but no primary press outlet has confirmed this. No independent financial reporting on Meicai exists after 2021, so profitability status as of 2026 remains unverified.
Did Meicai ever go public?
No. Meicai confidentially filed for a U.S. IPO in May 2021 and explored a Hong Kong listing in July 2021 after Beijing's crackdown on U.S. listings, but both plans were shelved. As of 2026 there is no record it has completed an IPO.
Who is Meicai's biggest competitor?
Meituan, via its Kuailv restaurant-supply arm, is Meicai's most direct threat, explicitly named in 2021 reporting as betting on fresh-produce sourcing with far greater capital and existing restaurant relationships from its food-delivery business.
Did Meicai lay off workers?
Yes. In September 2021, TechNode reported Meicai closed its Chengdu R&D center and cut at least half of staff across several Beijing HQ teams (product, sales, finance), following the collapse of its online-grocery expansion and shelved U.S. IPO.
How much funding has Meicai raised?
Meicai raised about $450M in January 2018 at a $2.8-3B valuation, then roughly $600-800M in October 2018 at a $7B valuation, backed by Tiger Global, Hillhouse Capital and GGV Capital. No new round has been publicly confirmed since 2018.
Could AI replace Meicai's business?
Unlikely to fully replace it. Meicai's core value is physical warehousing, last-mile delivery, and farmer/restaurant relationships built by 2020 across 300+ cities, which are logistics-based rather than software-based, though forecasting and routing tools are AI-automatable and available to rivals too.
