The call

The delivery network and lending business keep buyers locked in, but a Brazil fee fight with Shopee and fresh securities investigations are testing how much that's worth.

MercadoLibre runs online marketplaces and a payments system across Latin America, controlling how packages move in the region through its own delivery network. It is hard to copy because Amazon tried for years in Brazil and still ranks third, and Shopee would need to build the same physical infrastructure from scratch, but Shopee is already winning customers by charging lower fees, which is squeezing MercadoLibre's profits. The one thing that could unwind this story is the loan-term investigation: MercadoLibre extended how long it lets customers pay for purchases, and when it disclosed this change in May 2026, regulators opened fraud probes; if those turn into lawsuits or force big write-downs of unpaid loans, the company stops looking like a reliable money-maker.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI tools help MELI run pricing, fraud checks, and logistics routing, but no AI product is taking its customers. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Shopee (Sea Limited). Shopee is cutting fees and winning price-sensitive buyers in Brazil, forcing MercadoLibre to adjust its own seller fees to compete. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. Mercado Envíos ships 96% of items and reaches 40% of Brazil's GDP within 80km, a physical network Shopee and Amazon can't copy fast.
What would change this call
MercadoLibre Q2 2026 earnings (~Aug 5, 2026) show Brazil GMV or take-rate decline versus prior quarters. Would confirm Shopee's fee pressure is eating into MercadoLibre's core Brazil revenue, not just marketing.
Any securities-fraud lawsuit gets filed following the May 2026 loan-term disclosure investigations. Would show the credit-loan issue is becoming a real legal and balance-sheet liability, not just a disclosure scare.
Mexico (CNBV) or Argentina central bank grants or denies MercadoLibre's full banking license application. Would show whether regulators are reinforcing or blocking its fintech expansion moat.

Questions people ask
Is MercadoLibre profitable in 2026?
Yes. MercadoLibre reported FY2025 net income of $1.99-2.0 billion on net revenue of $28.9 billion, up 39% YoY. However, net income growth lags far behind revenue growth due to heavy infrastructure, credit, and AI spending, as reported March 5, 2026.
Could AI replace MercadoLibre's business?
Unlikely soon. AI already handles nearly 90% of Mercado Pago customer queries and scaled catalog tagging 100x via GPT-4 Vision, but MercadoLibre's physical last-mile logistics network, banking licenses, and multi-country credit data form a moat AI alone cannot replicate, per 2026 analysis.
Who is MercadoLibre's biggest competitor?
Shopee (Sea Limited) is described by multiple 2026 analysts as MercadoLibre's most formidable competitor, actively taking share in Brazil and forcing fee and shipping policy changes, more than Amazon, which ranks third in Brazilian e-commerce as of December 2025.
Who owns MercadoLibre?
MercadoLibre is a publicly traded company on NASDAQ under ticker MELI since August 2007, with no controlling parent. eBay once held a 19.5% stake from 2001 until divesting in 2016; ownership is now widely held by institutional investors.
Why did MercadoLibre stock crash in May 2026?
MercadoLibre shares fell 12.7-13.1% on May 8, 2026 after disclosing that average consumer loan terms in Brazil had extended from about 5 months to 8 months, raising credit quality concerns and triggering multiple securities fraud investigations by law firms.
Is MercadoLibre losing market share to Amazon or Shopee?
MercadoLibre is holding off Amazon, which ranks third in Brazilian e-commerce as of December 2025, but is facing real pressure from Shopee, which is gaining ground in Brazil and forced MercadoLibre to adjust seller fees and shipping policy in early 2026.
