The call

Mintel's proprietary GNPD data keeps it useful to AI rather than replaced by it, but its cheaper report business sits exposed to the same tools.

Mintel sells market research reports and data subscriptions to consumer goods companies, helping them understand what products people are buying and why. The company is hard to replace because it has spent since 1996 collecting detailed information about every new product launched in stores, called GNPD, which no competitor has matched; however, cheap generic reports that Mintel sells are now being undercut by free AI tools like ChatGPT and Claude that can write similar summaries instantly. The real question is whether Mintel's customers will keep paying for its specialized product database and AI tools, or whether they will switch to asking an AI assistant for free answers instead.

Why
01
AI pressure: OpenAI Deep Research and similar agentic tools. General AI tools can replicate cheap category-overview reports, squeezing the $2,995-$4,995 syndicated tier Mintel still sells. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Kantar. Kantar is 3 to 4 times bigger and could build a GNPD rival, but hasn't moved to do so. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. GNPD holds 30 years of proprietary product-launch data that no chatbot can scrape, feeding Mintel's own Leap AI tool.
What would change this call
Mintel headcount changes reported in 2026-2027 filings or press. A cut would signal AI-driven margin squeeze on the syndicated-report business.
Mintel's rank in the next annual MRS UK league table (typically published December). A slide versus Kantar, Euromonitor, NielsenIQ would show competitive erosion.
Public disclosure or estimate of GNPD/Leap subscription share of total revenue. Below 50% and shrinking would confirm the proprietary-data moat is losing ground to commodity report decline.

Questions people ask
Is Mintel profitable and financially stable in 2026?
Mintel is privately held with no disclosed audited financials, but third-party estimates from ZoomInfo put 2026 revenue at roughly $362 million, up from about $246.6 million in 2022, suggesting steady growth rather than distress as of July 2026.
Could AI replace Mintel's market research reports?
General-purpose LLMs and deep-research agents threaten Mintel's commodity syndicated reports priced $2,995 to $4,995, but Mintel's Leap AI platform, launched January 2024, is trained only on its proprietary GNPD dataset dating to 1996, which generic AI cannot access.
Who is Mintel's biggest competitor?
Kantar is the largest UK market research rival, posting £426.5 million in 2023 UK turnover versus Mintel's much smaller estimated size; other close peers named in 2026 competitor analyses include Euromonitor, NielsenIQ, Ipsos and GlobalData.
Who owns Mintel?
Mintel Group Ltd is privately held, not publicly traded, per Wikipedia as of June 24, 2026. It appears to remain founder or management-linked ownership with no documented VC or PE stake, and it acquired Black Swan Data in June 2025 rather than raising outside capital.
What is Mintel Leap and why does it matter?
Mintel Leap is a closed-loop generative AI platform launched in January 2024, marketed as hallucination-resistant because it trains exclusively on Mintel's proprietary analyst-verified data dataset, according to Mintel's own product page dated December 20, 2025.
Has Mintel made any acquisitions recently?
Yes, Mintel acquired Black Swan Data, an AI-native social-trend-prediction company previously backed by growth investor Oxx, in June 2025, aiming to strengthen predictive and real-time social analytics per PR Newswire, June 4, 2025.
