The call

Minecraft's install base and Microsoft backing hold steady, but Roblox's scale and Minecraft's shrinking revenue point to a slow, ongoing squeeze.

Minecraft is a sandbox game where players build and explore worlds together. It has sold over 350 million copies and has hundreds of millions of players, plus Microsoft owns it and integrates it across Xbox, Windows, and schools. The problem is that Roblox and Fortnite are growing much faster by offering free play with more social features, while Minecraft's money has dropped from $500 million a year to $220 million. The one thing that could change everything is whether Microsoft fully launches a free version of Minecraft to compete directly with Roblox and keeps the game getting regular updates that players actually want to play.

Why
01
AI pressure: Google DeepMind's Genie-style world-generation AI. Text-to-world AI could let anyone generate playable sandboxes, cutting into Minecraft's build-it-yourself draw. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Roblox Corporation. Roblox's free-to-play UGC platform now earns more per quarter ($1.44B, Q1 2026) than Minecraft does per year. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. 15+ years of player-built worlds, Xbox/Windows/Education lock-in, and $500M+ paid to creators keep builders inside Minecraft.
What would change this call
Minecraft Blast's iOS launch decision, expected within 6 months. Shows whether Microsoft commits to a free-to-play repositioning against Roblox.
Whether FY2027 Xbox layoff waves reach Mojang staff. Tests if Mojang's direct-to-CEO elevated status still shields it from cuts.
Minecraft's MAU falling in absolute terms for 2+ straight quarters. Would show real player base erosion, not just slowing growth.

Questions people ask
Who owns Mojang Studios and Minecraft?
Microsoft has owned Mojang since November 2014, when it acquired the Swedish studio for about $2.5 billion. Mojang operates as a subsidiary of Xbox Game Studios, and since July 2026 reports directly to Xbox CEO Asha Sharma rather than through the standard studio hierarchy.
Are there layoffs at Mojang Studios in 2026?
Yes. As part of Microsoft's July 2026 Xbox wide reset covering 3,200 job cuts, Mojang lost 52 roles, including two art directors, per GameFile reporting dated 2026-07-08. Only about half of the announced Xbox cuts had been executed by that date.
Is Minecraft's biggest competitor Roblox?
Roblox is widely cited as Minecraft's main rival: Roblox's Q1 2026 revenue hit $1.44 billion, and Newzoo data from March 2026 shows 46% of Minecraft players also play Fortnite, indicating heavy audience overlap and shared attention among sandbox and UGC titles.
Could AI replace Minecraft or Mojang's development?
Not directly as of mid-2026. Generative demos like Oasis can predict simplified Minecraft-like gameplay frame by frame, but Mojang's 350M+ lifetime copies, 15+ years of player worlds, and Marketplace creator economy (over $500 million paid out) remain hard to replicate. Microsoft has instead layered Copilot AI into Minecraft Education, not core gameplay.
Is it safe to take a job at Mojang Studios right now?
Mojang was elevated to report directly to Xbox CEO Asha Sharma in July 2026, signaling strategic importance, but the same month it cut 52 roles as part of a 3,200 job Xbox wide reset, with further cuts expected through Microsoft's FY2027.
Is Minecraft still growing or shrinking?
Minecraft remains the best-selling video game ever, with over 350 million lifetime copies sold as of April 2025 and Realms subscribers estimated up 17% year over year to 4.3 million by April 2026, even as Microsoft restructures the broader Xbox division around it.
