The call

Mobile Legends still leads its region on player loyalty and esports weight, but the company is changing owners twice in five years while Tencent's rival games sit right next to it.

Moonton makes Mobile Legends: Bang Bang, a multiplayer battle game popular in Southeast Asia, especially among players connected through in-game teams and local esports tournaments. Tencent, a much larger competitor that owns similar games, has tried to knock MLBB off its throne with Wild Rift but hasn't fully succeeded in the region yet. The big risk right now is that Moonton is being bought by Savvy Games (a new owner also taking over other big game companies at the same time), and nobody knows yet if Savvy will keep MLBB as a priority or let it fade while focusing on other games. One thing that could change everything: if Wild Rift suddenly starts winning over MLBB players in Southeast Asia, it would prove the competition can actually take the crown.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. Generative AI speeds up hero art and voice production but hasn't produced a rival pulling players off Mobile Legends' guilds and esports ties. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Tencent (Riot Games' Wild Rift and Tencent's own Honor of Kings). Tencent already sued Moonton and runs Wild Rift plus Honor of Kings in the same region, though neither has pulled Mobile Legends' user base down yet. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Ten years of Philippine and Indonesian guild networks, local hero lore, and official esports status (Asian Games, national federations) that rivals haven't replicated.
What would change this call
Wild Rift MAU or revenue share rises in Philippines/Indonesia through 2026. Would show Tencent is pulling players away from MLBB in its core region, not just growing elsewhere.
Savvy Games completes or delays the Moonton acquisition close in 2026. Would show whether ownership transition proceeds smoothly or creates instability.
MLBB full-year 2026 IAP revenue and MAU figures released. Would show whether the January 2026 tournament boost was temporary or reflects real growth.

Questions people ask
Who owns Moonton now, ByteDance or someone else?
ByteDance signed a deal on March 20, 2026 to sell Moonton to Saudi Arabia's Savvy Games Group for approximately $6 billion, a roughly 50% premium over ByteDance's 2021 purchase price. As of July 2026, some reports still describe the deal as pending final close.
Is Moonton profitable?
No official profit figures are public. Mobile Legends: Bang Bang generated an estimated $194.99 million in in-app purchase revenue in 2024, up from $180.41 million in 2023, but still below its 2021 peak of $222.24 million, per AppMagic-based estimates cited April 2026.
Could AI replace Moonton's Mobile Legends: Bang Bang?
Unlikely to displace it outright. Generative AI mainly affects content and asset production costs industrywide, but MLBB's moat is a decade of Southeast Asian guild networks, esports federation recognition, and cultural entrenchment that AI tools do not replicate.
Is Tencent Moonton's biggest competitor?
Yes. Tencent owns both Honor of Kings, the top-grossing mobile MOBA worldwide as of mid-2025, and Riot Games' Wild Rift, which passed $1 billion in lifetime revenue by June 2026. Tencent's Riot Games also sued Moonton in 2022 over alleged copying.
Is Moonton facing layoffs?
No layoff reports were found. Moonton reported over 2,000 employees as of February 13, 2026, and its new owner Savvy Games Group offered employee incentive packages in April 2026 to retain staff through the ownership transition.
Is Moonton being sued by Tencent or Riot Games?
Yes. Tencent's Riot Games sued Moonton in 2022 alleging Mobile Legends: Bang Bang copied Wild Rift's characters and gameplay; the litigation was still described as ongoing as of an October 2022 report, and remains a legal overhang.
