Motorway
UK online marketplace matching car sellers with dealers via reverse auction.
Motorway runs a real marketplace with loyal dealers, but Carwow copies its model today and its own valuation hasn't moved since 2021 while losses persist.
Motorway lets car dealers and everyday sellers auction used cars to each other through an app, and has sold over 500,000 cars to real dealers. But it is not hard to copy: Carwow, which is almost exactly the same size, runs the identical auction model right now and is actively competing for the same dealers and sellers. Constellation Automotive, which is five times bigger and already owns different ways to buy and sell used cars, could combine those tools into a Motorway-like competitor tomorrow if it wanted to. The company is losing money (charges only 3% per sale), has not raised new investor money in 4.5 years, has half the cash it used to have, and just borrowed £25 million instead of getting investors to put in more money, which is the classic sign a company is avoiding admitting it is worth less than before. The one thing that could matter: whether the company actually makes a profit in 2025, which the world will find out in late 2026.
Motorway raises new funding as equity (at flat/up valuation) versus more debt or a down-round. Reveals whether investors still back the frozen $1.33B 2021 valuation.
Dealer count or bid volume shifts between Motorway and Carwow after Carwow's reserve-price change. Indicates which platform is winning dealer and seller liquidity.
- FY2024 revenue £66.4m, net loss £36.7m
- Cash reserves halved to £30m
- Valuation frozen at $1.33bn since Nov 2021
- Cash nearly halved to £30m with £133m accumulated losses as of FY2024 accounts.
- No new equity raise since 2021, reliance on £25m debt facility signals possible down-round avoidance.
- Carwow's reserve-price removal actively contesting dealer liquidity in real time (July 2026).
- FCA motor-finance redress scheme legal uncertainty could depress used-car market and GMV.
- Constellation Automotive could combine WBAC and BCA into a scaled direct competitor.
| Rival | Direction | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Carwow | contesting | Removed reserve prices July 2026, sparking dealer backlash, while Motorway kept reserves |
| Constellation Automotive Group | gaining on | ~$7bn owner of WBAC and BCA, structurally positioned to combine into a direct auction rival, not yet shipped as of 2026 |
| CarGurus | gaining on | Launched AI-powered car search tool in UK around mid-2026 10-year anniversary |
| Cazoo/Motors.co.uk | losing to | Cazoo collapsed May 2024; relaunched under Motors.co.uk April 2025 targeting Auto Trader, not Motorway directly |
- Is Motorway profitable in 2026?
- Not yet confirmed. Motorway posted a £36.7m net loss on £66.4m revenue in FY2024 (accumulated losses ~£133m), and projects 2025 revenue near £78m with narrowing losses. Company guidance points to profitability in 2026, but audited FY2025 accounts confirming this are not expected until around Q4 2026.
- Who owns Motorway?
- Motorway is privately held and VC-backed, with no parent company. Founders Tom Leathes (CEO), Harry Jones and Alex Buttle retain operational roles. Major investors from its $190m November 2021 Series C include Index Ventures, ICONIQ Growth, Latitude, Unbound and BMW i Ventures.
- Could AI replace Motorway?
- Unlikely to replace it outright as of July 2026. Motorway already uses AI internally (Google Cloud Vertex AI, Image Assist, document extraction claimed at 94.7% accuracy) as a tool, but its core moat is its regulated payment rails and 8,000+ vetted dealer network bidding real capital, infrastructure AI alone doesn't replicate.
- Who is Motorway's biggest competitor?
- Carwow is the closest direct rival, running an identical consumer-to-dealer auction model with 6,000+ dealers; in July 2026 Carwow removed seller reserve prices, sparking dealer backlash, while Motorway publicly kept reserves. Constellation Automotive Group (~$7bn, owns WBAC and BCA) is a larger latent threat.
- Has Motorway raised new funding recently?
- No new equity round has been reported since its $190m Series C in November 2021 that valued it over $1.33bn. Instead, filed 2024 accounts show a £25m loan facility dated 23 December 2025, and a February 2026 report says Trinity Capital committed £25m in growth capital.
- How does Motorway make money?
- Motorway charges sellers a tiered fee (free under £1,000; £29.99 to £99.99 above that) based on final sale price when a dealer wins the daily auction. Revenue is roughly 3% of gross merchandise value; FY2024 revenue was £66.4m on GMV in the billions.
