The call

Claritev still processes claims for hundreds of health plans, but its largest customer already built a replacement in-house and a DOJ criminal probe into its core pricing algorithm is unresolved.

MultiPlan helps health insurance companies negotiate lower prices for medical claims using a database and algorithm built over 40 years. The problem: UnitedHealth, its biggest customer, already built its own competing system called Naviguard and now handles its own pricing instead of paying MultiPlan, which cost the company about a third of its 2019 revenue. On top of that, the U.S. Department of Justice is investigating whether MultiPlan's pricing algorithm illegally fixed prices, and injured patients are suing for over 100 billion dollars in damages. The company has negative shareholder equity (negative 234 million dollars) with almost no financial cushion to survive a major court loss. The one thing that could change everything: if the DOJ criminal case gets dismissed or if other large insurers decide to stick with MultiPlan instead of building their own systems.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. No outside AI product targets their pricing algorithm yet; company uses AI internally to cut coding costs, not facing AI-driven rivals for repricing work. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: UnitedHealth Group (Naviguard). UnitedHealth already built Naviguard in-house and walked away with about 35% of 2019 revenue, proving the biggest customers can DIY this. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. A 40-year claims database feeding Data iSight pricing that 700 health plans still rely on, even as DOJ scrutiny grows.

MDL class certification ruling, expected 2027. Determines if $100B+ pre-trebling damages claim proceeds toward trial or settlement.
Top-5 insurer renewal rates and ACV bookings in Q2 2026 and subsequent earnings. Shows whether more large customers follow UnitedHealth into in-house repricing.

Questions people ask
Is MultiPlan (Claritev) profitable in 2026?
No. Claritev Corporation, formerly MultiPlan, posted a Q1 2026 net loss of $73.6M on revenue of $244.7M (up 5.8% YoY) as of May 7, 2026, despite a 60.0% adjusted EBITDA margin. The company carries negative shareholders' equity of about -$234M.
Did MultiPlan change its name to Claritev?
Yes. MultiPlan rebranded to Claritev Corporation in February 2025, with its NYSE ticker switching from MPLN to CTEV around February 28, 2025. Litigation still often names the entity as MultiPlan Inc., now known as Claritev Corporation.
Is Claritev under criminal investigation?
Yes. The DOJ Antitrust Division opened a criminal price-fixing probe into Claritev's Data iSight pricing tool, reported May 14, 2026. CTEV stock fell roughly 41 to 50 percent over the following two trading days, from $23.47 to $13.87.
Who is MultiPlan/Claritev's biggest competitive threat?
UnitedHealth Group's in-house Naviguard platform, built to replace the out-of-network cost-management services UnitedHealthcare had outsourced to MultiPlan; UnitedHealthcare alone represented about 35% of MultiPlan's 2019 revenue before that shift.
Could AI replace jobs at Claritev?
Partially already happening: on its May 7, 2026 earnings call Claritev said AI tools had nearly doubled internal coding team capacity without adding headcount, and in July 2026 it adopted CodeTogether's AITrax to measure AI-assisted development across over 1,000 technology associates.
Who owns MultiPlan/Claritev?
Private equity firm Hellman & Friedman acquired MultiPlan in 2016 at a roughly $7.5B valuation and remained its largest shareholder after the company went public via a Churchill Capital Corp III SPAC merger in October 2020, implied at about $11B enterprise value.
