The call

Nanya's record margins come from a DRAM shortage that customers are now paying to lock in, while CXMT and the Big Three wait offstage for the cycle to turn.

Nanya Technology is a Taiwanese company that manufactures DRAM, the memory chips that go into computers and phones. Right now it is making huge profits because chip shortages have pushed prices up, but this is temporary. When Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron decide to start making the same basic memory chips again (they have not left the market, just chosen not to flood it), and when a Chinese competitor called CXMT ramps up its factories over the next few years, Nanya's profits will shrink sharply because it has no special technology or product that rivals cannot copy. The one thing that could save the company is if the U.S. government blocks CXMT from exporting or expanding, which would keep competition weaker for longer.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI server and GPU memory demand is currently filling Nanya's order book, not displacing it; AI/server sales are over 20% of revenue. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: CXMT (Chinese state-backed DRAM maker) and the Big Three (Samsung, SK Hynix, Micron). CXMT is scaling legacy DDR4/LPDDR4 output toward an IPO, and the Big Three could redirect capacity back into that same commodity segment once the shortage eases. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Formosa Plastics ownership plus $2.5B in fresh equity and supply deals from SanDisk, Kioxia, Solidigm and Cisco locking in customers through the cycle.
What would change this call
CXMT completes its Shanghai STAR IPO around July 27, 2026 and reports quarterly wafer output. Shows how fast CXMT can scale legacy DRAM capacity into Nanya's segment.
DRAMeXchange/TrendForce DDR4 and DDR5 contract prices inflect downward before Nanya's 5A fab ramps revenue. Would show the pricing supercycle turning before Nanya's new capacity offsets it.
Samsung, SK Hynix, or Micron announce increased legacy DDR4/LPDDR4 output. Would show Big Three re-entering the commodity niche Nanya currently occupies alone.
Key numbers
  • Q2 2026 revenue up 684% YoY, gross margin 79.5% (2026-07-10)
  • $2.5B raised from SanDisk, Kioxia, Solidigm, Cisco (2026-03-27)
  • AI/server demand over 20% of revenue (2026-07-10)
Named risks
  • AI-driven DRAM supercycle management itself dates as lasting only 'at least through 2027', implying eventual margin turn. Severity: high
  • CXMT flooding Nanya's exact DDR4/LPDDR4 commodity niche with state-backed capacity. Severity: high
  • Big Three unblocked from re-entering legacy DRAM segment once profitable to do so. Severity: medium
  • No HBM capability or advanced EUV process, missing highest-margin AI memory segment. Severity: medium
  • Pending US Commerce Entity List decision on CXMT could remove or confirm geopolitical buffer. Severity: medium

Questions people ask
Is Nanya Technology profitable in 2026?
Yes, strongly. Nanya posted Q2 2026 net income of NT$50.2 billion on revenue of NT$82.549 billion (up 684.2% YoY), with gross margin of 79.5%, reported July 10, 2026. H1 2026 accumulated net profit reached NT$76.25 billion, EPS NT$23.38, driven by an AI-fueled DRAM shortage.
Who owns Nanya Technology?
Nanya is majority-controlled by Formosa Plastics Group. As of June 11, 2026, Nan Ya Plastics Corporation holds about 29.3%, while Formosa Plastics Corp, Formosa Petrochemical Corp, and Formosa Chemicals and Fibre Corp each hold roughly 8.8%, giving FPG entities collective majority control.
Could AI replace Nanya Technology's business?
No, AI is Nanya's demand driver, not a substitute. As of July 10, 2026, AI infrastructure and server demand contributed over 20% of Nanya's revenue. It makes physical DRAM chips (DDR4, DDR5, LPDDR) that AI systems require but cannot manufacture themselves.
Who is Nanya Technology's biggest competitive threat?
Two threats: the Big Three (Samsung 38%, SK Hynix 29%, Micron 22% DRAM share as of July 6, 2026) can re-enter legacy DRAM anytime, and CXMT, a Chinese state-backed maker that grew output from 40,000 to 720,000 wafers/quarter by end-2025 and is IPOing for about $8.6 billion in July 2026.
Is joining Nanya Technology safe right now?
Nanya is a real, profitable manufacturer, profitable 11 of the past 13 years with NT$282 billion accumulated profit through H1 2026, backed by Formosa Plastics and a $2.5 billion March 2026 investment from SanDisk, Kioxia, Solidigm and Cisco. But its 79.5% margins reflect a cyclical AI-driven shortage, not a durable moat, per management's own 'through 2027' framing.
Does Nanya Technology make HBM memory for AI chips?
No. As of July 10, 2026, Nanya does not produce HBM (high-bandwidth memory), the AI-accelerator-specific segment dominated by SK Hynix (58% HBM share as of June 25, 2026), Samsung and Micron. Nanya remains weighted toward legacy DDR4/LPDDR4, with DDR5 only about 10% of its shipment mix as of December 2025.
