The call

New Relic still has scale and deep customer lock-in, but its market share is sliding fast against Datadog and cloud-native AI agents while its private equity owners near a decision point.

New Relic is a monitoring and analytics business that helps companies track how their software performs. It was built with some stickiness: once New Relic's tools are woven into a company's systems, switching is annoying and risky. But New Relic's customer share has dropped sharply, from roughly one in six customers a year ago to one in eleven today, because Datadog competes on the same playing field and is winning, while Amazon, Microsoft, and Google are building monitoring directly into their own cloud services, making New Relic optional for companies already locked into one of those clouds. The one thing that matters most: whether New Relic can stop or slow its customer losses over the next few quarters. If it does, the private equity owner may hold out for a better sale price. If losses keep accelerating toward single digits, the company becomes a forced acquisition at whatever price a buyer will pay.

Why
01
AI pressure: AWS DevOps Agent, Azure SRE Agent, Amazon Q. Cloud providers now bundle AI-driven monitoring agents directly into AWS and Azure, cutting the reason to buy a separate observability tool. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Datadog. Datadog keeps outselling New Relic head to head, helping push New Relic's adoption share from roughly 15-20% down to 9-10% in about a year. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Customers who wired New Relic's NRQL and telemetry deep into their systems face real switching costs to rip it out.
What would change this call
New Relic's adoption share in vendor trackers (e.g. Ramp) over next 2-3 quarters. Stabilization suggests footing held; further drop toward single digits confirms erosion.
A re-IPO filing or strategic sale announcement by Francisco Partners/TPG. Would show a liquidity exit is materializing within the PE hold window.
FedRAMP High or DoD IL4 certification completion. Would strengthen regulated-market lock-in and could support a valuation re-rate.
Key numbers
  • Adoption share fell to 9-10%, from 15-20% a year earlier (2026-07-14)
  • Revenue passed $1 billion (2025-11-19)
  • Bought out for $6.5B, $87/share, in 2023 (2023-11-08)
Named risks
  • Adoption share nearly halved from 15-20% to 9-10% between early 2025 and mid-2026. Severity: high
  • PE ownership with no public earnings disclosure, roughly 2.5 years into a 3-5 year hold, raising exit/recap uncertainty. Severity: medium
  • Hyperscaler-native AI agents (AWS, Azure, Amazon Q) commoditizing core observability workflows. Severity: high
  • Conflicting revenue figures between company and EY sources suggest low financial transparency. Severity: medium
  • Continued executive turnover (new CRO July 2026, new CPO Oct 2025) may signal strategic instability. Severity: low

Questions people ask
Is New Relic still a public company?
No. New Relic was taken private in an all-cash deal by Francisco Partners and TPG, announced July 31, 2023 and completed November 8, 2023, at $87.00 per share, valuing the company at about $6.5 billion. It was delisted from the NYSE upon close.
Is New Relic profitable?
Unclear as a private company since no earnings are disclosed. Its last public financials, FY2023 (ended March 31, 2023), showed $925.6M revenue up 18% YoY but an operating loss of $185.2M, and no post-buyout profitability figures have been made public.
Is New Relic losing market share to Datadog?
Yes. Ramp's vendor tracker (July 14, 2026) shows New Relic's adoption share among observability vendor users fell to about 9 to 10 percent by mid-2026, down from 15 to 20 percent in early to mid 2025, with Datadog dominant in the category.
Could AI replace New Relic's core product?
Core dashboarding, root-cause analysis, and log triage tasks New Relic sells are increasingly commoditized by hyperscaler AI agents like AWS DevOps Agent, Azure SRE Agent, and Amazon Q, per the evidence brief dated through 2025-2026, pushing New Relic to reposition around agentic AI monitoring itself.
Has New Relic had layoffs recently?
No major layoffs have been reported since 2023. Prior rounds included 110 layoffs in 2022 and 200-plus in June 2023 (about 155 US plus 57 international) tied to a subscription-to-consumption pricing shift, with plans to backfill roughly half the roles.
Who owns New Relic now?
Private equity firms Francisco Partners and TPG have owned New Relic since completing their $6.5 billion all-cash acquisition on November 8, 2023. As of mid-2026 the company is about 2.5 years into a typical 3 to 5 year PE holding period with no public earnings calendar.
