The call

Nextracker leads a US tracker market shielded by policy from Chinese rivals, but tariffs and a post-tax-credit demand air pocket are squeezing near-term margins.

Nextracker makes the equipment that tilts solar panels to follow the sun across the day, and it controls more than half the U.S. market after a decade of leadership. It is hard to replace because it has built up real factories, customer relationships, and government rules that keep Chinese competitor Arctech Solar out of America, though smaller U.S. rivals like Array Technologies and GameChange Solar could theoretically grow. The main threat is not a better competitor but two policy problems hitting at once: import tariffs just jumped the company's costs from $20 million to $130 million per year, and a major U.S. tax credit for solar projects is about to expire, which could crater the demand for new trackers later in 2026 and into 2027.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI optimizes tracker software and plant layout but does not replace the steel, motors, and installation Nextracker sells. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Array Technologies and GameChange Solar. Both compete hard for US utility-scale contracts, but together with Nextracker they hold about 90% of the US market, not eating Nextracker's share. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. US content and FEOC rules block Chinese tracker makers like Arctech, while a $5.25B backlog and 50%+ US share lock in near-term volume.
What would change this call
Nextracker's Q1 FY2027 earnings (July 30, 2026) bookings trend vs prior quarter. Shows whether post-OBBBA tax-deadline demand cliff is materializing.
Outcome of Section 122/301 tariff court challenge ruling (July 24, 2026). Determines if $130M tariff cost burden persists or is reduced.
Backlog figure in next two quarterly reports versus $5.25B Q4 FY26 level. Two straight declines would signal weakening demand or lost deals.
Key numbers
  • Backlog $5.25B, up from $2.1B at 2023 IPO (2026-03-31)
  • Tariff costs jumped $20M to $130M in FY26 (2026-03-31)
  • FY27 guidance raised to $3.8B-$4.1B revenue (2026-05-12)
Named risks
  • Post-OBBBA tax-credit deadline (July 4, 2026) may cause a demand air-pocket in later 2026 bookings. Severity: high
  • US tariff costs rose from $20M to $130M in FY26 amid unsettled Section 122/301 tariff litigation. Severity: high
  • 77% of FY26 revenue is US-derived, concentrating exposure to US policy and tariff shifts. Severity: medium
  • Gross margin already compressed ~150bps in FY26 from tariff pressure, could worsen if tariffs increase further. Severity: medium

Questions people ask
Who owns Nextracker (Nextpower) today?
Nextracker, now branded Nextpower, is an independent public company on Nasdaq under ticker NXT. Flex spun off its remaining stake to shareholders on January 2, 2024, ending prior parent ownership. Market cap was about $16.4 billion as of July 2026.
Is Nextracker/Nextpower laying off workers in 2026?
No layoff signal found. Headcount was roughly 1,070 as of June 2026, essentially flat year over year, while the company opened a new Nashville hub and doubled steel production capacity in 2026, suggesting hiring in operations rather than cuts.
Could AI replace Nextracker's core business?
Unlikely. Nextracker/Nextpower's core product is physical steel tracker structures and actuators, not AI-substitutable. The company itself launched an AI and Robotics unit in July 2025, spending over $40 million on acquisitions like OnSight and Amir Robotics to automate O&M, not to be disrupted by outside AI.
Who is Nextracker's biggest competitor?
In the US, Array Technologies and GameChange Solar are the closest rivals, together with Nextpower controlling about 90% of the US market as of 2025. Chinese maker Arctech Solar leads globally in non-US markets like Saudi Arabia but is structurally blocked from the US by FEOC rules.
Is Nextracker (Nextpower) profitable in fiscal 2026?
Nextracker posted record FY26 (ended March 31, 2026) revenue of $3.56 billion, up 20% year over year, but gross margin compressed about 150 basis points to 32.6% as tariff costs jumped from about $20 million to $130 million during the year.
Why did Nextracker rebrand to Nextpower?
Nextracker rebranded to Nextpower on November 12, 2025, under the same ticker NXT, to signal expansion beyond trackers into electrical balance-of-systems (via the May 2025 Bentek acquisition), AI/robotics, and power conversion and storage markets.
