The call

NIQ still holds the broadest cross-retailer data set in CPG measurement, but retailers selling their own data and AI tools summarizing it are squeezing the margin on the insight layer it built its business on.

NielsenIQ collects checkout data from stores and sells reports and insights to consumer brands so they can understand what is selling where. It has been hard to copy because it spent decades building relationships with retailers and collecting massive amounts of sales data, but that advantage is shrinking fast. Walmart, Kroger, and Amazon are now selling their own customer data directly to brands, cutting out the middleman, and artificial intelligence can now auto-generate the kinds of reports that Nielsen used to charge premium prices for. The company's growth has slowed to 5 or 6 percent a year even though revenue stays strong, a sign that customers are already paying less. The one thing that could matter: whether Nielsen's new AI-powered products (Optiq, Commerce Lab, Product Intelligence) actually convince brands to pay more for smarter analysis, or whether they just slow down the race to the bottom.

Why
01
AI pressure: ChatGPT shopping, Perplexity, and agentic commerce tools that auto-generate insight reports. LLMs can already summarize scanner data and answer category questions that used to require a paid NIQ report. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Walmart Luminate, Kroger 84.51°, and Amazon Marketing Cloud. Retailers now sell their own point of sale and shopper data straight to CPG brands, cutting NIQ out of the deal. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Decades of point of sale feeds and panel relationships across thousands of retailers that no single retailer's data can replace.

Any public CPG defection to Walmart Luminate, 84.51°, or Amazon Marketing Cloud. Would show marquee clients shifting spend to retailer-owned data over NIQ.
Adoption and revenue disclosure for NIQ's Optiq, Commerce Lab, Product Intelligence tools. Strong uptake would show NIQ countering AI-driven commoditization of its insight layer.
