The call

Falcom keeps a loyal fanbase paying for the same two franchises while much bigger Asian studios fight over everyone else's attention.

Nihon Falcom makes story-heavy Japanese role-playing games, with two beloved series that have kept fans loyal for decades (Ys started in 1987, Trails started in 2004). Other big game makers like Square Enix or Sega cannot just copy these games because fans are attached to the specific worlds and characters, and there is no business reason for them to try. However, Chinese and Korean studios with bigger budgets are making rival RPGs that appeal to younger players worldwide, and artificial intelligence is speeding up how fast new games can be made, which could hurt Falcom if it tries to launch fresh series instead of relying on remakes of old hits. The question is whether Falcom can create a brand new game that sells as well as its classics, or whether fans will only keep buying the same two franchises forever.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. No AI tool replaces a decades-deep hand-written Trails storyline; risk is Falcom itself using AI localization and angering fans. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: HoYoverse, NetEase, Krafton. These studios pour AI-accelerated budgets into gacha and open-world RPGs, pulling player time away from Falcom's mid-budget story games. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. Ys and Trails fans buy nearly everything Falcom ships, and no big publisher wants this small, low-margin niche.
