The call

Nordic keeps growing on an installed base of certified low-power wireless chips while Espressif presses on price and its cloud software pivot remains unproven.

Nordic Semiconductor designs tiny wireless chips that use very little battery power, mainly for things like smartwatches, fitness trackers, and home automation devices. The company has a strong grip on the market because billions of its chips are already out in the world, customers have built software around them, and getting new products certified takes time and money. However, Espressif undercuts Nordic on price for similar work, and Silicon Labs has caught up on power efficiency, so Nordic's advantage is shrinking. The company is betting on a new service called nRF Cloud and a new chip called Axon to generate more money, but whether these moves will actually work and make real profit remains unproven over the next few years.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. Nordic sells into AI, not against it: its Axon NPU chip targets edge AI workloads on nRF54LM20B silicon. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Espressif. Espressif ships cheaper Wi-Fi/BLE combo chips that undercut Nordic on cost in overlapping IoT segments today. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Billions of nRF52/53 units already designed into products, Bluetooth certifications, and a dev toolchain switching costs make sticky.
What would change this call
Espressif ships a BLE part with real SDK matching Nordic's power efficiency. Would show Nordic's cost/capability moat eroding against a shipped rival.
Nordic reports loss of a top-10 customer in an earnings release. Would confirm concentrated customer base is actually churning to rivals.
Memfault/nRF Cloud services fail to hit mid-2027 profitability target. Would show the software/cloud pivot is stalling as core chip growth cools.
Key numbers
  • FY2025 revenue USD 668M, up 31% YoY (2026-02-05)
  • Q1 2026 revenue USD 192M, up 24% YoY (2026-06-25)
  • Top 10 customers are 57% of revenue (2026-02-05)
Named risks
  • Top 10 customers make up 57% of revenue as of Q4 2025, exposing Nordic to concentration shocks. Severity: high
  • Memfault integration into nRF Cloud targeted for completion by end of 2026 carries execution risk. Severity: medium
  • Cloud and software services profitability target (mid 2027) may slip, undermining the pivot beyond chips. Severity: medium
  • Espressif and Silicon Labs continue to contest cost and capability in overlapping ultra-low-power segments. Severity: medium
  • USD denominated revenue reporting from Norway based operations exposes results to FX and tariff swings. Severity: low

Questions people ask
Is Nordic Semiconductor profitable in 2026?
Yes. Nordic posted FY2025 revenue of USD 668 million, up 31% year on year, with a full year adjusted EBITDA margin of about 10% as reported February 5, 2026. Q1 2026 revenue hit USD 192 million, up 24% YoY, with Q2 2026 guided at USD 200 to 220 million and gross margin above 50%.
Who is Nordic Semiconductor's biggest competitor?
Espressif Systems undercuts Nordic on cost in overlapping Bluetooth LE and Wi-Fi segments, while Silicon Labs matches it on ultra-low-power capability and certifications. Texas Instruments also competes directly. As of mid-2026 neither has broadly displaced Nordic's design-win base of billions of shipped nRF52 units.
Could AI replace Nordic Semiconductor?
No. Nordic's core product is physical low-power RF semiconductor silicon that AI models cannot manufacture or replace. Instead, Nordic is embedding AI as a feature, launching the Axon NPU-enabled nRF54LM20B chip in January 2026 and AI-assisted chip-to-cloud development tooling in May 2026.
Who owns Nordic Semiconductor?
Nordic Semiconductor ASA is a public company with no controlling parent, listed on the Oslo Stock Exchange under ticker NOD since 1996. Market capitalization was approximately NOK 32.4 billion as of July 24, 2026, per gurufocus.com.
What is Nordic Semiconductor's revenue growth trend?
FY2025 revenue was USD 668 million, up 31% YoY from USD 511.4 million in 2024, reported February 5, 2026. Q1 2026 revenue was USD 192 million, up 24% YoY, with rolling 12 month revenue at USD 705 million, up 19% YoY, per the June 25, 2026 pre-close update.
How dependent is Nordic Semiconductor on a few large customers?
Top 10 customers accounted for 57% of Nordic's revenue in Q4 2025, per the company's February 5, 2026 earnings call, indicating meaningful customer concentration risk even as overall revenue grew 31% for the full year.
