The call

Notional lost its original product to someone else's exploit and is now a tiny, unfunded challenger trying to take share from Pendle with a single vault.

Notional Finance used to let people lock in fixed interest rates on cryptocurrency loans, but a November 2025 hack wiped out more than half of what lenders had deposited, forcing the company to shut that down. The company has now pivoted to a new product called Notional Exponent that lets people invest in yield tokens, launching in January 2026 with just one investment option and no public information about how many customers are using it. Pendle Finance already controls more than half of this market and is expanding to multiple blockchains, while Notional is trying to compete as a 12-person team with almost no new money since 2021. What could reset the situation is either rebuilding customer trust by recovering funds from the hack, or proving that Notional Exponent can grow to multiple vaults with real customer interest before the end of 2026.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. This is a crypto smart-contract exploit and market-share story, not an AI displacement story. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Pendle Finance (over 50% of yield-management TVL, expanding cross-chain). Pendle dominates the exact yield-tokenization market Notional Exponent just entered with one vault and no track record. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. None apparent: no new capital since 2021, a 12-person team, and a token worth about $585K fully diluted.

Questions people ask
Is Notional Finance still operating after the Balancer hack?
Yes, but its original product is gone. Notional V3 fixed-rate lending was permanently wound down after the Nov 3, 2025 Balancer exploit caused a 56.019% lender haircut on Mainnet. The company pivoted to a new product, Notional Exponent, which launched Jan 26, 2026.
Did Notional Finance lose money in the Balancer hack?
Notional's users did. Per Notional's own Nov 20, 2025 postmortem, Mainnet lenders took a 56.019% haircut and Arbitrum lenders a 19.244% haircut, with bad debt of 632.8 ETH on Mainnet and 80.2 ETH on Arbitrum, after Balancer V2 was drained of $128M+.
Can Notional Exponent compete with Pendle Finance?
Unproven so far. As of mid 2026, Pendle holds over 50% of yield-management TVL and is expanding to Solana, while Notional Exponent launched Jan 29, 2026 with a single vault (mAPOLLO) and no publicly disclosed TVL or traction figures.
Who funds Notional Finance?
Notional raised an undisclosed seed round around September 2020 and a $10M Series A on April 29, 2021 led by Pantera Capital with ParaFi, 1confirmation, Spartan Group, Nascent, Nima Capital, and Coinbase Ventures. No funding round has been reported since.
What is Notional Finance's token worth?
As of June 25, 2026, NOTE's market cap was roughly $275,000 to $312,000 with a fully diluted valuation around $585,000 to $591,000 (vendor-claimed, per DeFiLlama), reflecting a severely depressed token value against a 100M max supply.
Could AI replace what Notional Finance does?
Not directly. Notional's core function is smart-contract-mediated lending logic, not AI-replaceable knowledge work. AI could automate peripheral tasks like support or anomaly monitoring, but there is no public evidence Notional itself has deployed AI features as of 2026.
