The call

Numerator holds real purchase data other firms cannot quickly copy, but its AI product launch and Bain Capital's exit timeline both land in the next two years.

Numerator collects real receipt data from over one million U.S. households and sells it to companies that want to know what people buy. It is hard to copy quickly because gathering that much receipt data takes years, but two other companies, Circana and NielsenIQ, have similar data and are buying up more assets in the space. The real threat is that AI tools could let customers ask questions directly instead of paying analysts to do it, which could shrink Numerator's revenue faster than its basic data sales grow. In September 2026, Numerator is launching a new AI product called Nexa that will show whether the company can keep customers happy as this technology change happens.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. Self-serve AI query tools could let brands pull purchase answers directly, shrinking the analyst-report layer Numerator sells around its data. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Circana; NielsenIQ. Both rivals are acquiring adjacent Nielsen assets and suing each other while racing to match Numerator's panel scale. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. A receipt-verified household panel spanning 1M+ US homes and 50+ countries after the Worldpanel merger, hard to rebuild fast.
What would change this call
Nexa's September 2026 launch and its pricing versus Numerator's existing analyst-services fees. shows whether self-serve AI is compressing Numerator's analyst-mediated revenue layer.
Outcome of Circana vs NielsenIQ litigation and any resulting asset or client transfers. indicates whether one rival is consolidating share at the other's expense in the oligopoly.
A Bain Capital sale, refinance, or IPO filing for Numerator within the next 2-3 years. would confirm the PE exit clock and potential leadership or roadmap disruption.

Named risks
  • AI self-serve query tools could compress Numerator's analyst-mediated services revenue layer. Severity: medium
  • Nexa's September 2026 launch is unproven; execution failure could undercut AI positioning. Severity: medium
  • Bain Capital ownership since 2021 raises probability of exit or sale process disrupting leadership and roadmap. Severity: medium
  • Circana and NielsenIQ consolidating adjacent measurement assets and litigating, intensifying three-way oligopoly pressure. Severity: medium
  • No independently audited revenue disclosed since 2020, making current financial health difficult to verify externally. Severity: low

Questions people ask
Is Numerator profitable in 2026?
No public profitability figures exist. Numerator is private and PE-owned by Bain Capital; the last disclosed revenue figure was ~$170M LTM as of September 30, 2020, per a Moody's note tied to the 2021 Kantar acquisition. No 2025 or 2026 profit data has been published.
Who owns Numerator?
Numerator is owned by Bain Capital. Kantar (60% Bain-owned) bought Numerator from Vista Equity Partners for about $1.5 billion in April 2021. Numerator's own site states it is not owned by Kantar directly, and Kantar's Worldpanel unit was folded into Numerator in 2025.
Could AI replace Numerator's analyst services?
Numerator's core moat is receipt-verified purchase data from 1M+ US households and 50+ countries post-Worldpanel merger, which AI cannot scrape or fabricate. But its analyst-mediated reporting layer is exposed to compression by self-serve AI tools like its own Nexa agent, launching September 2026.
Who is Numerator's biggest competitor?
Numerator competes with Circana and NielsenIQ in a three-way CPG measurement oligopoly. Circana has been consolidating aggressively, acquiring Nielsen's NCSolutions in June 2025 and its Marketing Mix Modeling business in August 2025, and is in active litigation with Nielsen as of December 2025.
Is Numerator a public company?
No, Numerator is privately held, currently owned by Bain Capital as of 2026. It has never IPO'd. It was previously owned by Vista Equity Partners (2017-2021) before Kantar acquired it for about $1.5 billion in April 2021.
What is Numerator's Nexa AI product?
Nexa is Numerator's conversational AI agent for natural-language querying of its purchase-data platform, announced March 30, 2026, powered by data from over 200,000 US households and 4 million-plus items purchased daily. It is scheduled to launch in September 2026.
