The call

Oatly's sales and share are recovering, but a thin cash pile against half a billion dollars of debt means the next refinancing, not the next competitor, decides its fate.

Oatly is a company that makes oat-based drinks to replace dairy milk. The company is struggling because its early lead in oat milk was not protected by anything special: bigger food companies like Danone and Chobani have copied the product and taken customers away (Planet Oat is now the largest oat-milk brand in the US, and Oatly's share in China dropped from nearly all the market to about two-thirds). The real danger is money: Oatly owes about $547 million but has only $49 million in cash, and it will not make positive free cash flow until 2027, so it may need to borrow or sell more stock at bad prices before its debt comes due in late 2026. The one thing that could save it is if the company can prove it is making real profit again and refinance its debt without giving away too much ownership, or if it finds a buyer for its China business.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. Oatly sells a physical grocery product; no AI agent or model currently displaces oat milk on a shelf. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Chobani (Planet Oat via HP Hood) and Danone's Alpro. Chobani raised $650M and owns the La Colombe barista channel; Planet Oat and Alpro already sit next to Oatly in dairy coolers worldwide. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Recovering US retail share, positive adjusted EBITDA, and a recognizable brand that big dairy conglomerates still copy rather than kill.

Questions people ask
Is Oatly profitable in 2026?
Not yet on a net income basis. Oatly's Q2 2026 net loss narrowed to $31.3M from $55.9M a year earlier, and 2025 was its first full year of positive adjusted EBITDA since IPO. Full-year free cash flow is not expected to turn positive until 2027, per July 22, 2026 guidance.
Who owns Oatly Group?
Oatly has no controlling owner. It has been publicly traded on Nasdaq (OTLY) since its May 20, 2021 IPO. Blackstone Inc. is the largest disclosed institutional holder at about 9.25% as of March 4, 2026, followed by Hillhouse (~2.25%) and Amundi (~1.63%).
Why has Oatly's stock crashed since its IPO?
Oatly's market cap has fallen roughly 97-99% from its IPO peak of $10-15B in May 2021 to about $300M by July 21, 2026, driven by years of losses, dilutive debt raises, and lost market share to rivals like Planet Oat and Chobani.
Who is Oatly's biggest competitor?
Chobani, which raised $650M in October 2025 at a roughly $20B valuation and entered oat milk in 2019 via aggressive M&A, plus Danone's Alpro and HP Hood's Planet Oat, which reportedly overtook Oatly as the largest US oat-milk brand by 2023.
Is Oatly cutting jobs?
Yes. Oatly reduced headcount by 94 employees to 1,388 during fiscal 2025 as part of ongoing restructuring, and closed its Singapore co-packing plant with Yeo's in December 2024, affecting 59 workers total.
Could AI replace Oatly's business?
No. Oatly's core value is physical oat-processing manufacturing, cold-chain distribution, and three decades of brand equity, none of which AI can replicate. AI exposure is limited to marketing content and demand-forecasting tools, per 2026 analysis, with no Oatly-specific AI deployment confirmed.
