Obsidian
Local-first, markdown note-taking app that stores your files on your own disk, not the cloud.
On the record
Checkpoint: Any Notion local-file/offline launch, or a founder/CTO departure denting release cadence
The call
Obsidian stays small on purpose, keeps files in the user's hands, and lets Notion and AI labs fight over the cloud instead.
Obsidian lets you write and organize notes as plain text files stored on your own computer, rather than sending them to a company server like Notion does. This makes it hard for Notion or AI tools to replace Obsidian, because Notion is locked into cloud storage and AI chatbots work best when they can access data online. The biggest risk is that the company is tiny (fewer than 20 people) and depends heavily on its two founders, so if one of them leaves, the product could slow down or lose direction.
Why
01
AI pressure: Anthropic/OpenAI native 'personal knowledge vault' agent. No frontier lab has shipped a first-party agent that operates on local files, but if one does it could copy Obsidian's plugin tricks. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Notion. Notion has 25% of the note-taking market but runs on cloud lock-in, and hasn't shipped a real local-first offline mode since resisting the idea since 2020. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. Notes live as plain markdown files on the user's own disk, so switching away from Notion's cloud model would require Notion to rebuild itself.
What would change this call
Notion ships a local-first offline mode with open file export and no lock-in. would show Obsidian's core architectural moat is being directly challenged.
Steph Ango or Shida Li departs Obsidian's leadership team. would show key-person fragility harming release cadence and strategy.
Anthropic or OpenAI launches a first-party personal knowledge vault agent for local files. would show frontier labs commoditizing Obsidian's plugin-based AI skills.

Key numbers
- 3 engineers, ~7-18 total staff
- 4,600+ community plugins
- ARR estimates range $2M to $25M
Named risks
- Only 3 engineers and founder-driven vision create key-person fragility that could stall release cadence.
- Revenue and valuation figures wildly inconsistent across trackers ($2M vs $25M ARR, $5.9M vs $350M) and unaudited.
- Anthropic or OpenAI could ship a first-party personal knowledge vault agent that commoditizes obsidian-skills.
- AI-native PKM entrants multiplying quickly could erode differentiation of community AI plugins.
Rivals, as read in July 2026
| Rival | Direction | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Notion | contesting | Notion holds ~25% PKM share and crossed ~100M active users Q1 2026, but its cloud-lock-in model blocks copying Obsidian's local-first moat |
| Logseq | contesting | Free, open-source, local-first outliner closest in philosophy to Obsidian as of April 2026 comparisons |
| Roam Research | gaining on | Roam's development pace slowed since 2021-2022 with users migrating to Obsidian and Logseq, per 2026 reviews |
| AI-native entrants (Mem 2.0, Tana, Capacities, Ponder) | contesting | Attacking the cloud PKM niche with bolt-on AI features, not Obsidian's local-first segment, as of 2026 |
Questions people ask
- Is Obsidian profitable?
- Obsidian is bootstrapped with zero outside funding and describes itself as 100% supported by users, not investors. Revenue estimates vary widely: one tracker cites ~$25M ARR as of April 2026, while another pegs 2025 revenue near $2M as of July 2026. No audited figures exist.
- Who owns Obsidian?
- Obsidian is privately held and independent, founded in 2020 by Shida Li (CTO) and Erica Xu (COO), with Steph Ango (kepano) as CEO. It has taken no venture funding and has no parent company or acquisition history as of July 2026.
- Who is Obsidian's biggest competitor?
- Notion is the largest incumbent in the broader note-taking market, holding roughly 25% share versus Obsidian's ~8% as of June 2026, per third-party market analysis. Logseq is the closest philosophical rival, offering a similar free, local-first, Markdown-based approach.
- Could AI replace Obsidian?
- Unlikely to fully replace it: Obsidian's core value is local-first, plain-text Markdown files a user owns outright, independent of any AI service. Rather than building native AI chat, CEO Steph Ango released open 'obsidian-skills' in early 2026 letting agents like Claude Code operate on vaults.
- Is Obsidian free to use?
- Yes, the core app is free for personal use and, since February 19, 2025, also free for commercial use. Paid add-ons include Obsidian Sync at $4-5 per month and Obsidian Publish at $8 per site per month, as of June 2026 pricing.
- What is Obsidian's valuation?
- An informal ~$350M valuation estimate circulated in press commentary around April 6, 2026, tied to reported ~$25M ARR with a tiny team. This is not from an official funding round since Obsidian has taken no outside investment; a separate tracker cites a much lower $5.9M figure.
