The call

Odoo keeps growing fast on its own bundled, open-source model while Microsoft competes nearby without yet cutting into that growth.

Odoo sells software that handles accounting, customer contacts, inventory, payroll, and online stores all in one place, rather than forcing companies to buy separate programs from different vendors. It is hard to replace because once a company uses many of Odoo's connected modules together, switching to a competitor like Microsoft Dynamics or SAP would mean relearning everything and rebuilding all the connections between those tools. The one thing that could change this is if Microsoft adds its AI assistant Copilot to Dynamics 365 and convinces small businesses that the combination is better than Odoo, or if a brand new AI-first company builds a completely new kind of business software from scratch and wins over companies that have never used Odoo before.

Why
01
AI pressure: AI-native ERP startups (none at scale yet). New AI-first ERP tools target small businesses from scratch, but Odoo already bakes OpenAI and Gemini into its own modules. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central. Microsoft's SMB ERP with Copilot competes directly but has not pulled Odoo's new-customer growth down yet. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. One database across 50+ modules plus 7,500 partners and a 50,000-app marketplace make switching costly and rare.

  • An AI-native ERP startup could target new-SMB adoption from underneath, though none currently shipped and taking share. Severity: medium

Questions people ask
Is Odoo profitable?
Yes. Odoo was profitable and largely self-funded for roughly eight years before 2024, raising no primary capital in that period, per TechCrunch's November 20, 2024 reporting on its €500M secondary share sale.
Who owns Odoo?
Founder Fabien Pinckaers remains CEO of privately held Odoo S.A. Summit Partners is the largest institutional shareholder; CapitalG, Sequoia, BlackRock, Mubadala, HarbourVest, AVP and Alkeon hold stakes after a €500M secondary sale in November 2024.
Is Odoo planning an IPO?
No IPO has been announced as of 2026. CEO Fabien Pinckaers publicly stated he is in no rush to go public, per TechCrunch's November 20, 2024 report on Odoo's €5B secondary-sale valuation.
Could AI replace Odoo?
Unlikely soon. Odoo embeds OpenAI and Gemini as ingredient features (OCR, summarization, AI Agent in Odoo 19, September 2025) but its moat is a unified single-database system-of-record across 50+ modules that standalone AI tools cannot replicate without rebuilding the underlying business data system.
Who is Odoo's biggest competitor?
Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central is described as the most common head-to-head SMB competitor, per ERP Research's July 7, 2026 comparison, thanks to tighter Microsoft 365 and Teams integration; Oracle NetSuite competes for companies outgrowing Odoo.
How many employees does Odoo have in 2026?
Estimates vary: Revelio Labs counted about 7,800 employees as of December 2025, and Crustdata reported about 8,769 by June 2026. Odoo itself cited nearly 7,000 employees in September 2025 with a stated target of 10,000 by end of 2026.
