The call

Onto is winning packaging sockets from KLA right now, but its growth guidance leans hard on AI capex staying strong and KLA not shipping a real answer.

Onto Innovation sells equipment that helps chip factories check their work during manufacturing. The company has built real advantages: customers need years to qualify and test its tools before switching, and its combination of custom hardware, software, and data models is hard for rivals to copy quickly. However, KLA is the bigger player in this space and is fully capable of competing; Onto's growth depends on whether tech companies keep spending huge amounts on new chip factories, which is not guaranteed; and the company just added debt and stakes that could pressure finances, while US rules on selling to China could also cut into sales.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI datacenter buildout is a tailwind here: HBM and advanced packaging demand from AI chips drives most of the growth Onto is guiding for. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: KLA Corporation. KLA already sells competing inspection tools and could use its size to re-win advanced-packaging sockets Onto just took in HBM4. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Once a fab qualifies Onto's hardware and software for a process node, switching tools mid-production is slow and costly for the customer.
What would change this call
KLA launches a competing advanced-packaging inspection tool and wins back a displaced socket from Onto. Would show KLA closing the gap and eroding Onto's new HBM4 lead.
Onto's Q2 2026 earnings (Aug 6, 2026) versus its own >30% FY2026 growth guidance. Miss would signal AI capex demand softening or execution strain.
US-China export control tightening (BIS July 2026 rules, China Decrees 834/835) cutting Onto's China dual-use tool sales. Would show geopolitical risk materially denting Onto's revenue base.
Key numbers
  • FY2025 revenue hit $1.005B, first time over $1B (2025-12-31)
  • Q1 2026 revenue up 9.5% YoY to $291.95M (2026-Q1)
  • FY2026 guidance calls for >30% revenue growth (2026-07-01)
Named risks
  • Q2 2026 earnings on August 6 must validate aggressive over-30% FY2026 growth guidance. Severity: high
  • US-China export control escalation, including July 2026 BIS rules and China's Decrees 834/835, could cut dual-use tool revenue. Severity: high
  • $1.3B convertible notes issued May 2026 create dilution and leverage risk if stock trades above ~$381.80 conversion price. Severity: medium
  • Growth thesis depends on continuation of AI-driven semiconductor capex supercycle. Severity: medium
  • KLA, the dominant incumbent, is not structurally blocked from pivoting into advanced-packaging inspection. Severity: medium

Questions people ask
Is Onto Innovation profitable in 2026?
Yes. Onto Innovation posted FY2025 revenue of $1.005 billion, crossing $1 billion for the first time, and non-GAAP diluted EPS guidance of $1.26 to $1.36 for the full year, per its 2026-02-19 earnings report. Q1 2026 revenue rose to $291.95 million with non-GAAP EPS of $1.42.
Could AI replace Onto Innovation's products?
No. Onto's core business is physical sub-nanometer wafer inspection and metrology hardware that requires optics, X-ray, and sensors AI cannot replicate. AI is embedded inside its tools, like the Dragonfly G5 launched 2026-03-16, as a defect-classification feature, not a substitute for the hardware itself.
Who is Onto Innovation's biggest competitor?
KLA Corporation is the dominant incumbent in semiconductor process control, holding over 90 percent share in some tool categories per a 2022 analysis. Onto competes directly with Camtek in advanced packaging inspection and displaced an incumbent tool of record with its HBM4 win announced 2026-03-16.
Is Onto Innovation a safe company to join right now?
Headcount grew about 4.1 percent to roughly 1,615 employees as of 2025-12-31 per Macrotrends, and the company is described as actively hiring amid a revenue ramp. Risks include a heavily leveraged balance sheet after a $1.3 billion convertible note issuance on 2026-05-18 and dependence on AI capex continuing.
Who owns Onto Innovation?
Onto Innovation is a standalone public company trading on NYSE as ONTO since its 2019 formation from the Rudolph Technologies and Nanometrics merger, with no parent company. Market capitalization was approximately $14.5 billion as of 2026-07-24 per gurufocus.com.
What is Onto Innovation's revenue growth guidance for 2026?
Onto guided full-year 2026 revenue above $1.3 billion, implying growth over 30 percent, with advanced-packaging revenue expected to grow over 50 percent and advanced-node revenue about 25 percent, according to a 2026-07-01 earnings call summary. Actual Q2 2026 results are due 2026-08-06.
