The call

Orca still builds real, agentless cloud scanning tech, but its main rival now has Google's balance sheet and distribution behind it.

Orca Security finds and fixes security problems in cloud systems without installing special software on every machine. The company has solid technology and government certifications that are hard to copy, but its main competitor, Wiz, was bought by Google in 2025 for $32 billion and now has Google's money and customer relationships behind it. Orca has not raised new funding since 2021, so it cannot match Google's resources. The biggest question is whether Google will bundle Wiz into its cloud platform deals in the next year or two, which could squeeze Orca out of customers who use multiple cloud providers.

Why
01
AI pressure: Microsoft Security Copilot. Microsoft bundles AI-driven posture checks straight into Azure, chipping at demand for standalone tools like Orca. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Wiz, now owned by Google Cloud. Google can fold Wiz into GCP contracts and outspend Orca on sales, support, and roadmap. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. FedRAMP Moderate status and a cloud-neutral pitch let Orca sit inside AWS, Azure, and GCP shops that don't want a Google-owned tool watching their other clouds.
What would change this call
Google bundles Wiz into standard GCP enterprise contracts within 12-18 months. Would show Google using distribution to squeeze Orca's multi-cloud customer base.
Orca announces a new funding round or acquisition within 6 months. Resolves the 58-month funding silence and signals investor confidence or capital strain.
Independent analyst data (e.g. Gartner, IDC) shows Wiz share gains accelerating while Orca growth flattens. Would confirm customer attrition toward Wiz rather than stable coexistence.
Key numbers
  • Google Cloud paid ~$32B for rival Wiz (2025)
  • 58 months since Orca's last funding round (2026-07)
  • Cut 15% of staff, about 60 people (2024-01)
Named risks
  • 58 months without a new funding round while $1.8B valuation stays unchanged as of mid-2026. Severity: high
  • Wiz's Google-backed scale and distribution could squeeze Orca's multi-cloud positioning over 12 to 18 months. Severity: high
  • No audited revenue disclosed; third-party estimates conflict from ~$64M to over $100M, obscuring true financial health. Severity: medium
  • Recurrence of layoffs given prior January 2024 cut and industry-wide 2026 job reductions tied to AI investment. Severity: medium
  • Unresolved 2023 patent lawsuit against Wiz could resurface with adverse rulings or costs. Severity: low

Questions people ask
Is Orca Security profitable?
Orca Security has never published audited revenue, and third-party estimates conflict wildly, from about $64M to over $100M for 2024. As of mid-2026 it has raised no new funding since October 2021, leaving profitability status unverified and its $1.8B valuation stale.
Did Orca Security have layoffs?
Yes. In January 2024 Orca Security cut about 15% of staff, roughly 60 employees, citing macroeconomic conditions, per CRN reporting from that period. Headcount has since modestly rebuilt to an estimated 500 to 520 employees by mid-2026.
Could AI replace Orca Security?
Unlikely to fully replace it. Orca's patented SideScanning and Unified Data Model give it proprietary agentless telemetry across AWS, Azure and GCP that generic AI cannot replicate, and it added agentic AI itself via the May 2025 Opus Security acquisition and a March 2026 Agentic Cloud Security Platform launch.
Who is Orca Security's biggest competitor?
Wiz is Orca's closest rival, using the same agentless CNAPP architecture. Google Cloud acquired Wiz for roughly $32B in 2025, giving it hyperscaler backing and distribution that Orca, which hasn't raised funds since October 2021, cannot match.
Who owns Orca Security?
Orca Security is privately held and venture-backed, with no parent company. Investors include CapitalG (Alphabet), Redpoint Ventures, ICONIQ, Temasek, YL Ventures, GGV, Splunk Ventures and Cisco Investments, per Pitchbook data. Its last funding round closed in October 2021 at a $1.8B valuation.
Has Orca Security raised any new funding recently?
No. Orca Security's most recent disclosed raise was a $340 to 550 million Series C extension led by Temasek in October 2021 that set its $1.8B valuation. As of July 2026, per Crustdata, that valuation has remained unchanged for roughly 58 months.
