Osmosis Labs
Osmosis is a decentralized exchange built for trading tokens across Cosmos blockchains.
Osmosis is shrinking fast while the chain it runs on debates buying it out, and IBC Eureka gives Cosmos assets a way to skip it entirely.
Osmosis is a decentralized exchange, or DEX, that lets people trade cryptocurrencies on the Cosmos blockchain network. It has lost about 98% of its value and users over the past few years, partly because its parent blockchain, Cosmos Hub, is now trying to take it over through a vote that would convert Osmosis tokens into Cosmos tokens and eliminate Osmosis as an independent company. Osmosis's main job, being the go-to place to trade assets within Cosmos, is also being replaced by direct routing systems built into Cosmos itself and by rival exchanges on other Cosmos chains. The one thing that could change the picture is if the next Cosmos Hub governance vote rejects the merger and if Osmosis can rebuild its user base before the new routing system takes over its role completely.
IBC Eureka routing volume share versus Osmosis's own bridging volume over the next year. Rising Eureka share shows Cosmos chains bypassing Osmosis directly.
Osmosis monthly fee revenue or TVL falling further below current $5.5M/yr and $15M levels. Continued decline signals the protocol heading toward wind-down.
- TVL fell to $15M from $700M+ peak
- Monthly volume $200M, down from $3B in 2022
- 2025 revenue $5.5M per merger proposal
- Cosmos Hub merger (COSMOSIS) could pass on a resubmitted vote, ending Osmosis sovereignty.
- IBC Eureka could structurally reroute bridged liquidity around Osmosis independent of any merger.
- Founder attention diverted to Sunny Aggarwal's new venture Polaris, leaving maintenance to a grants program.
- Sustained 80-98% collapse in TVL and volume from 2022-2023 peaks with no reversal signs by mid-2026.
- OSMO price extreme volatility (200%+ single-day moves) tied to governance news creates instability.
| Rival | Direction | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Cosmos Hub | losing to | COSMOSIS proposal sought to absorb Osmosis into Cosmos Hub via ATOM conversion, March 2026 |
| Uniswap | losing to | Uniswap holds ~55% of DEX volume with $4.5B TVL vs Osmosis's $15M TVL, mid-2025/2026 |
| PancakeSwap | losing to | PancakeSwap ~20% DEX share and $325B monthly volume in June 2025 dwarfs Osmosis |
| IBC Eureka (Cosmos Hub routing) | losing to | Could reroute bridged liquidity directly through Hub, bypassing Osmosis, flagged April 2026 |
| Sibling Cosmos IBC chains (dYdX, Injective) | losing to | Capturing IBC connections that previously ran through Osmosis, per March 2026 analysis |
- Is Osmosis Labs still profitable in 2026?
- Osmosis's own 2025 revenue was cited as $5.5 million in a March 2026 governance proposal, but TVL has collapsed to about $15 million by mid-2026 from a 2023 peak of $700M+, and monthly volume fell to roughly $200 million from a $3 billion 2022 peak, showing severe decline despite nominal profitability claims.
- Could AI replace Osmosis's DEX functions?
- Osmosis's AMM swap routing and price discovery are algorithmic and already commoditized by AI-driven aggregators like 1inch, which route billions weekly. As of 2026, Osmosis has shipped no AI features itself, leaving its core function exposed to bot and aggregator competition.
- Is Osmosis DEX being acquired by Cosmos Hub?
- A March 2026 COSMOSIS proposal would have converted about 665 million OSMO to ATOM over six months, merging Osmosis into Cosmos Hub. The Cosmos Hub governance vote narrowly rejected this on April 17, 2026, but renewed debate continued into May 2026.
- Who is Osmosis's biggest competitor?
- Within Cosmos, sibling IBC chains and Cosmos Hub itself (via IBC Eureka routing) are capturing liquidity that once ran through Osmosis. Broadly, Uniswap holds about 55% of DEX volume and PancakeSwap about 20% as of mid-2025, dwarfing Osmosis's roughly 22nd-place DEX ranking.
- Has Osmosis's OSMO token recovered from its all-time high?
- No. OSMO's all-time high was $11.25 around 2021 to 2022; by mid-2026 its fully diluted valuation sat around $32-38 million and market cap around $25-41 million, reflecting a dramatic multi-year decline in value.
- What triggered OSMO's 200% price spike in May 2026?
- Renewed debate over a revised Cosmos Hub merger proposal (COSMOSIS) on May 11, 2026 triggered a roughly 200% one-day OSMO price spike to about $0.128 on $174-241 million volume, before retracing to about $0.052 by May 26, 2026.
