Phemex
Singapore-based crypto derivatives and spot exchange for retail traders.
Phemex covered its hack losses and kept trading volume flowing, but it competes against far richer rivals with no license and no new capital since 2020.
Phemex lets people trade cryptocurrency futures, a way to bet on crypto price changes without owning the actual coins. The company is being crushed by much bigger competitors like Binance and OKX that have way more money, more customers, and better legal permission to operate in major countries like the US and Europe. Phemex has been hit by a massive hack in January 2025 and is banned or warned against in several key markets, making it harder to grow. The one thing that could save it is if the company somehow gets real legal approval to operate in the US or Europe, or if it becomes known for offering unique products like futures contracts on private companies or real-world assets that bigger exchanges don't have yet.
Phemex obtains a MiCA, US, or UK regulatory license/authorization. Would show regulatory disadvantage vs. licensed incumbents is closing.
A second major security breach or additional FCA-style warnings in new jurisdictions occur. Would show trust and compliance risk are worsening, accelerating user attrition.
- $50M valuation on last funding round, none since
- $69 to 85M stolen in Jan 2025 hot-wallet hack
- $1.69B avg daily perps volume, $0.70B spot (2026)
- Recurrence of security breach after $85M hot-wallet hack (Jan 2025).
- Regulatory exclusion expanding beyond FCA warning, US/UK exclusion, and Ontario exit.
- BTC concentration at 73.3% of open interest amplifies exposure to crypto downturns.
- No funding since 2020 Series A while rivals scale with billions in fresh capital.
- Founder-to-new-CEO transition (Nov 2025) creates strategic and cultural uncertainty.

- Is Phemex profitable in 2026?
- No public profit data exists. ZoomInfo estimates Phemex's revenue at roughly $20.4 million as of July 6, 2026, but this is an unconfirmed third-party estimate, not a company disclosure. Phemex has not published audited financials, and no profitability figures have been reported.
- Is it safe to use Phemex after the hack?
- Phemex suffered an $85 million hot-wallet breach on January 23, 2025. It restored full withdrawals within about three days, published Proof-of-Reserves, and covered all user losses from company funds by January 26, 2025, then added Fireblocks MPC custody afterward, per company statements.
- Who owns Phemex?
- Phemex is privately held, founded in 2019 by former Morgan Stanley executives led by Jack Tao. Its last funding was a $3.5 million Series A in March 2020 at a $50 million valuation. Federico Variola became CEO, succeeding Tao, in a corporate rebrand on November 13, 2025.
- Who is Phemex's biggest competitor?
- Binance dominates the retail crypto exchange market, with OKX (valued at $25 billion after an Intercontinental Exchange investment in March 2026), Bybit, Gate, and Bitget as top-5 rivals. Phemex ranked roughly #26 among tracked derivatives exchanges by open interest as of July 15, 2026.
- Could AI replace Phemex's trading platform?
- Unlikely to eliminate Phemex outright since custody, compliance, and exchange matching remain human-directed functions. However, AI already automates trading bots and copy-trading features Phemex offers, and support/KYC workflows across the exchange industry are increasingly automatable, per background industry trends as of 2026.
- Has Phemex raised any new funding recently?
- No. Phemex's last funding round was a $3.5 million Series A in March 2020 led by NGC Ventures, bringing total funding to $5 million at a $50 million valuation. CB Insights and PitchBook still listed that as the latest round as of November 2025.
