The structural protection is eroding.

The call

PPRO keeps landing bank and PSP partners even as those same partners quietly weigh building local payments themselves, with leadership turnover adding to the uncertainty.

PPRO lets companies accept payments in 150+ countries by handling local rules and connecting to local payment systems. It is hard to copy because it has licenses from financial regulators and spent years building connections to local banks and payment networks. But its biggest customers, like Stripe and PayPal, are now building these same connections themselves instead of relying on PPRO as a middleman. If Stripe and PayPal keep sending more payment volume through PPRO, the company stays relevant; if they route new payment methods through their own systems instead, PPRO becomes a shrinking tool rather than a core partner.

Why
01
AI pressure: AI-driven fraud detection and reconciliation automation (EBANX, Adyen native AI tools). Rivals like Adyen bundle AI fraud and optimization natively, letting PSPs handle local payments without a middleman. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Stripe, PayPal, Adyen building in-house local payment method coverage. PPRO's biggest customers are also its biggest threat: they are building the same local-payments coverage internally. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. FCA and Luxembourg CSSF licenses plus 250+ already-built local integrations that took years to assemble.
What would change this call
Stripe announces new local payment methods launched via its own stack rather than PPRO within 12 months. Would show PPRO's largest customer is internalizing the service it once outsourced.
PayPal or Citi publicly state they are bringing local-payment-method coverage in-house. Would confirm top customers are replacing PPRO rather than expanding with it.
PPRO's next funding round valuation is disclosed as flat or down versus its 2021 $1B+ mark. Would indicate investor confidence in PPRO's independent growth is weakening.

Questions people ask
Is PPRO profitable in 2026?
PPRO does not publish audited financials. Its CFO Rahul Raswant stated the company delivered record revenue in 2023, announced alongside a March 2024 EUR85M (~$93M) funding round from Eurazeo, PayPal Ventures, J.P. Morgan and Citi Ventures. No profitability figure has been disclosed since.
Who owns PPRO?
PPRO is privately held and VC-backed, not publicly traded. Investors include Eurazeo, Sprints Capital, Wellington Management, HPE Growth, PayPal Ventures, J.P. Morgan, Citi Ventures and BlackRock-managed funds, following rounds in 2021 and March 2024.
Could AI replace PPRO's business?
AI threatens PPRO's differentiated layer: rivals EBANX and Adyen already bundle native AI fraud and conversion tools, but PPRO's UK FCA e-money license, Luxembourg CSSF license and 250+ local payment integrations are harder for AI tools alone to replicate as of July 2026.
Is Stripe PPRO's biggest competitive threat?
Yes and no. Stripe is both PPRO's customer and a threat: Stripe and Adyen are increasingly shipping native local-payment-method coverage, reducing reliance on orchestration middlemen like PPRO, per April 2026 industry analysis, even as dLocal remains PPRO's named primary direct competitor.
Is PPRO a safe company to join in 2026?
Signals are mixed but growth-leaning: no layoffs reported, headcount reached 511 employees (6.2% YoY growth) by July 2026, and PPRO added a new CTO, CFO, CPO and CEO transition through 2025-2026, indicating active scaling rather than contraction.
What is PPRO's valuation?
PPRO reached a $1B+ valuation in January 2021 after a $180M raise led by Eurazeo, Sprints Capital and Wellington Management. Its March 2024 EUR85M (~$93M) round did not disclose an updated valuation figure.
