The call

Practo's clinic software keeps hospitals locked in, but its consumer marketplace sits flat in India while Apollo, Tata 1mg, and untested AI search reshape how patients find care.

Practo runs a marketplace where patients find doctors and book appointments, plus software that clinics and hospitals use to manage their operations. In India, the company is losing to Apollo 24/7 (which is backed by a major hospital chain and can send patients directly to its own doctors) and Tata 1mg (which is backed by a pharmacy and can steer people to doctors who prescribe their medicines). Practo's own doctor network and booking app cannot match these built-in advantages. The company is betting big on the United States market to prove its value, but that plan has not been tested yet, and it is hard to know if the promised numbers are real.

Why
01
AI pressure: General AI search and chat agents (Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT) answering health queries directly. AI agents could answer 'find me a doctor' queries directly, bypassing Practo's discovery front-door before users ever open the app. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Apollo 24/7 and Tata 1mg. Hospital-backed Apollo and pharmacy-backed Tata 1mg run live rival marketplaces with supply-chain ties Practo cannot replicate. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. 17 years of provider relationships plus Ray and Insta clinic/hospital software that hospitals rely on for daily operations.

Questions people ask
Is Practo profitable in 2026?
Practo turned operating EBITDA positive at ₹15 crore in FY25, reversing a ₹17 crore loss in FY24, while revenue stayed roughly flat at ₹234 crore (~$28M) versus ₹240 crore the prior year, per an August 2025 report.
Who owns Practo?
Practo is privately held and venture-backed, with investors including Peak XV Partners, Tencent, Matrix, Sofina, Google Capital, AIA Group, Thrive Capital, Yuri Milner and Z47. Its last priced round was a $32M Series D led by AIA Group in August 2020, with total disclosed funding around $211-230M.
Is Practo laying off employees in 2026?
No new mass layoffs were reported in 2026, but Practo's headcount was roughly flat at 2,459 employees versus 2,508 in 2025 and down from a 2023 peak, while active job postings fell 54.8% to just 45 in 2026, signaling a hiring slowdown.
Who is Practo's biggest competitor in India?
Apollo 24/7, backed by Apollo Hospitals' physical network, and Tata 1mg, backed by pharmacy supply chains, are Practo's closest rivals; both have structural advantages Practo lacks in converting digital consults into referrals or drug sales, as of March 2026 analysis.
Could AI replace Practo's doctor-discovery platform?
As of May 2026 Practo itself used AI to handle over 20,000 daily calls and chats in its US operations, crediting AI for helping cross $100M in US GMV, making AI currently additive rather than a replacement threat, though general LLM agents could disintermediate consumer discovery long-term.
Is Practo planning an IPO?
Practo was in advanced talks as of February 2026 to raise $100-125M in a pre-IPO round at a roughly $700M valuation, targeting a 2027 public listing, but as of July 2026 no DRHP filing with India's SEBI had been reported.
