The call

Prefect just bought its main modern rival and turned profitable, but its newest growth engine depends on Anthropic keeping MCP open rather than building its own gateway.

Prefect builds software that helps companies automate data and AI tasks in an organized way. It just bought its main competitor Dagster, which removes one threat, but it still has to out-innovate free open-source tools like Apache Airflow and keep ahead of Astronomer, which commercializes Airflow. The company's newest advantage rests on a feature called Horizon that works closely with Anthropic's AI tools, but that advantage disappears if Anthropic decides to build and sell its own competing product or changes the rules for how these tools connect to each other.

Why
01
AI pressure: Anthropic or OpenAI shipping a first-party enterprise MCP gateway. Prefect's FastMCP/Horizon lead rests on Anthropic keeping MCP open; a first-party gateway from Anthropic or OpenAI could gut that edge fast. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Astronomer (Apache Airflow). Astronomer sells the incumbent Airflow standard and could win back deals if it ships a modernized Airflow 3.x that closes the gap. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Deep workflow lock-in across 100+ enterprise accounts plus owning both leading modern orchestrators after buying Dagster.
What would change this call
Anthropic or OpenAI launches a first-party enterprise MCP gateway/hosting product. Would directly threaten Prefect's Horizon/FastMCP dependence on Anthropic's goodwill.
Public reports of Dagster+ customer churn or team departures within 6 months of the July 2026 acquisition. Would show the Dagster integration is destabilizing rather than consolidating share.
Astronomer or Kestra announces a modernized Airflow 3.x release aimed at Prefect's agent/workflow customers. Would show the legacy incumbent regaining ground in the modern orchestration segment.
Key numbers
  • FastMCP: 92-95M downloads/month, ~70% MCP server share (2026-07)
  • Prefect framework: 1.8M weekly downloads (2025-04)
  • No priced funding round disclosed since $32M Series B (2021-06)
Named risks
  • Horizon/FastMCP advantage depends on Anthropic's goodwill and MCP protocol neutrality, not a structural moat. Severity: high
  • Dagster integration execution risk over next 2-4 quarters could cause customer retention or roadmap problems. Severity: medium
  • No priced funding round disclosed since June 2021 despite major July 2026 acquisition. Severity: medium
  • Conflicting headcount reports (63 vs 137 employees) suggest thin or unstable team size relative to peers. Severity: medium
  • Astronomer could ship a modernized Airflow 3.x that wins back deals from Prefect. Severity: medium

Questions people ask
Is Prefect profitable in 2026?
Prefect states it has operated profitably for the past year as of July 13, 2026, when it announced the Dagster acquisition. This is a self-reported, unaudited claim since Prefect is a private company with no public financial disclosures.
Did Prefect acquire Dagster?
Yes. On July 13, 2026, Prefect announced it agreed to acquire Dagster Labs, terms undisclosed, combining the two leading modern Python-native workflow orchestrators. Dagster keeps its name, open-source license, and roadmap, and its founders become strategic advisors to Prefect.
Who is Prefect's biggest competitor?
Apache Airflow, the open-source category incumbent, and its managed distribution Astronomer (Astro) remain Prefect's largest rivals as of July 2026. Prefect's closest modern-era rival, Dagster, was acquired by Prefect on July 13, 2026, removing that competitive pressure.
Could AI replace Prefect?
AI copilots can already scaffold simple workflow DAGs, pressuring generic glue-code use cases, but Prefect's production reliability, compliance certifications, and hybrid infrastructure lock-in are harder to replace. Prefect itself ships an MCP server (beta, March 18, 2026) so AI assistants can monitor its deployments rather than replace them.
Is Prefect a safe company to join right now?
Headcount reports conflict: Pitchbook lists 137 employees as of December 2025 while Builtin's April 2026 leadership page shows 63. No layoffs are reported, Prefect claims profitability as of July 2026, and it just acquired Dagster, but combined post-acquisition headcount has not been disclosed.
How much funding has Prefect raised?
Prefect has raised roughly $46 million to $57.6 million total across Seed ($2.5M, Dec 2019), Series A (~$11.5M, Feb 2021), and Series B ($32M led by Tiger Global with Bessemer, June 10, 2021), per Pitchbook. No priced round has been publicly disclosed since 2021.
