The call

Proton is growing fast behind policy protection and Geely's manufacturing muscle, but Chinese brands are closing in and Geely's long-term commitment to the marque is still unproven.

Proton makes cars in Malaysia and is growing quickly, especially with electric vehicles and a new factory partnership with Chinese owner Geely. The Malaysian government gives Proton tax breaks that other carmakers do not get, which helps it compete against local rival Perodua. However, Chinese companies like BYD are selling aggressively in Malaysia with lower prices and newer electric models, and nobody knows yet whether Proton's government protection will hold up if these rivals start directly targeting Proton's customers instead of just taking sales from Japanese brands like Toyota. The biggest question is whether Geely stays committed to Proton as its own brand or starts treating it as just a factory that builds cars for others.

Why
01
AI pressure: Chinese EV makers' AI-driven cockpits and ADAS (BYD DiPilot, Xiaomi smart cabin tech). Rivals are packing AI cockpit and driver-assist features into budget EVs, raising the bar Proton's line-up hasn't matched yet. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Chinese entrants (BYD, Chery, Jaecoo, Haval). BYD sales up 68% in 2025 and Chinese brands localizing assembly in Malaysia, so far eating Toyota and Honda share, not confirmed to be hitting Proton yet. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. National Automotive Policy duty and excise breaks plus Proton's domestic dealer network and Geely-backed Tanjong Malim export hub protect its home turf for now.
What would change this call
Proton's monthly Malaysia market share through H2 2026 versus BYD, Chery, and Jaecoo sales. Would show whether Chinese brands start taking mid-SUV/EV buyers directly from Proton, not just from Toyota/Honda.
Proton's full-year 2026 unit sales versus its 200,000-unit target. Would show whether growth momentum (100.3k in H1) held through H2 execution.
Any Geely group statement on ASEAN marque priority (Proton vs Zeekr, Galaxy, Lynk & Co). Would show whether Geely still treats Proton as a strategic marque or shifts focus elsewhere.
Key numbers
  • 2025 sales: 157,976 units, +3.3% YoY (2026-01-02)
  • Q1 2026 sales: 49,140 units, 22-year high (2026-04-02)
  • Domestic market share ~19.4% in 2025 (2025)
Named risks
  • Chinese EV entrants localizing assembly could bypass Malaysia's duty protections that shield Proton. Severity: high
  • Geely could deprioritize Proton as a marque in favor of contract assembly or other ASEAN brands. Severity: medium
  • Missing the 200,000-unit 2026 sales target after strong H1 momentum fades in H2. Severity: medium
  • DRB-HICOM quarterly earnings volatility, shown by a May 2025 Underperform downgrade before a May 2026 rebound. Severity: medium
  • Proton's core smart-vehicle software is licensed from Geely/ECARX rather than owned, limiting independent differentiation. Severity: low

Questions people ask
Is Proton profitable in 2026?
Proton's financials run through parent DRB-HICOM. Kenanga Research's 22 May 2026 note reported DRB-HICOM core net profit up 178% YoY on strong Proton sales, a rebound from a May 2025 Underperform downgrade, showing volatile but currently positive quarterly performance.
Who owns Proton?
Proton Holdings Berhad is majority owned by Malaysian conglomerate DRB-HICOM Berhad, holding a 50.1 to 51.1% stake as of 27 May 2026, with China's Zhejiang Geely Holding Group owning the remaining 49.9%, a stake acquired via a deal signed in June 2017.
Could AI replace Proton's car business?
No. Proton's moat is physical: national-champion manufacturing, dealer distribution, and Malaysia's duty/excise protections. Its in-car AI (cockpit, driver assistance) is inherited from partner Geely rather than built in-house, per its 2025 Tech Showcase, so AI is an inherited feature, not a threat to its assembly and distribution base.
Who is Proton's biggest competitor?
Domestically it's Perodua, Malaysia's market leader at about 41.7% share in 2025 versus Proton's 17.6 to 19.4%. The faster-moving threat is Chinese entrants like BYD, up 68.1% in Malaysia in 2025, though management says they are currently eroding Japanese brands like Toyota and Honda more than Proton.
Is Proton growing or shrinking in 2026?
Growing sharply. Proton posted 100,346 units in H1 2026, up 39.1% year over year and its best first half since 2011, following a 22-year-high Q1 of 49,140 units, putting it roughly on pace for its 200,000-unit full-year 2026 target announced 29 January 2026.
Does Geely control Proton?
Geely holds 49.9% of Proton versus DRB-HICOM's roughly 50.1 to 51.1%, so DRB-HICOM retains formal majority control, but since July 2023 Proton's brand financials have been consolidated onto Geely Auto's own balance sheet, reflecting deep operational integration.
