The call

Renault still sells the best-selling car in Europe through Dacia, but Chinese rivals are closing in on the cheap segment while margins and EV share slip.

Renault makes cars across all price ranges, from the budget-friendly Dacia brand to luxury vehicles. The company is getting squeezed: BYD and other Chinese carmakers are flooding Europe with cheap electric cars that undercut Renault's prices, while Renault is slower than competitors at building affordable electric vehicles (only 19% of sales versus 34% at rivals). Renault's profits are shrinking fast, and the company just abandoned its big electric car strategy. The key question is whether Dacia can build cheaper electric cars quickly enough to compete with BYD before losing too much market share in the low-cost segment where Renault has always been strong.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. Software defined vehicle push matters for margins, but no AI product is taking Renault's customers today. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: BYD and other Chinese OEMs. BYD sales in Europe jumped roughly 270% in 2025, aiming at the cheap car segment Dacia has owned for years. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Dacia's low cost engineering and Europe wide dealer and finance network still make it hard to undercut Renault on price and service in its home market.

Questions people ask
Is Renault Group profitable in 2025?
No. Renault posted a FY2025 net loss of €10.8 billion, driven largely by a €9.5bn non-cash accounting loss from reclassifying its Nissan stake to fair value. Operating margin still fell to 6.3% from 7.6% in 2024, per results reported February 19, 2026.
Who is the CEO of Renault Group?
François Provost, a 23-year Renault veteran, became CEO effective July 31, 2025, succeeding Luca de Meo. He launched the futuREady strategic plan on March 10, 2026, targeting 36 new models by 2030.
Is Renault losing market share to BYD in Europe?
Yes. BYD's European sales grew 270% in 2025 while Renault's BEV share of sales was only 19% in December 2025, versus 34% for rival brand pools, per ICCT's European Market Monitor published January 29, 2026.
Could AI replace Renault Group's business?
No. Renault uses Google's Gemini Code Assist for software-defined-vehicle code generation, per a Google Cloud case study dated July 16, 2025, but its core moat is manufacturing plants, dealer networks, and vehicle homologation compliance, which AI cannot replicate.
Is Renault Group a safe company to join in 2026?
Mixed. Renault reported almost 100,000 employees in March 2026 and more than 100,000 by July 2026, but it dissolved its flagship Ampere EV unit in January 2026 after a failed IPO, signaling ongoing organizational restructuring.

Renault announced on January 21, 2026 that Ampere, its dedicated EV and software unit launched in 2023 with a shelved 2024 IPO plan, would be dissolved and reintegrated into the parent group, reversing former CEO Luca de Meo's Renaulution strategy.
