The call

Rheinmetall's backlog and certification wall keep it ahead of software rivals like Helsing and reborn rivals like KNDS, but its stretched FY26 growth target makes execution, not competition, the thing to watch.

Rheinmetall makes weapons, ammunition, and ships for European armies and NATO. It is difficult to replace because governments prefer local suppliers for security reasons, building and certifying new weapons takes decades, and the factories are expensive and slow to build. The real question is whether its new shipbuilding business will succeed after losing one major project in mid-2026, and whether it can hit its growth targets in the second half of the year after a slow start.

Why
01
AI pressure: Helsing (German AI-native defense software). Helsing's AI targeting and drone software could win autonomous-systems contracts Rheinmetall wants, but doesn't touch its armor and ammunition base. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: KNDS (Franco-German land systems rival). KNDS pursued a €15B IPO in June 2026, giving it fresh capital to compete for the same NATO vehicle and artillery contracts. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. €73B backlog locks in years of revenue, and Bundeswehr/NATO certification plus munitions plants take decades to replicate.
What would change this call
F127 corvette and other naval program awards through 2026. Would show whether NVL can recover from the F126 loss or keeps losing naval bids.
H2 2026 revenue growth versus FY26 guidance of 40-45%. Would show whether Rheinmetall can convert its backlog into delivered sales on schedule.
KNDS IPO performance and any contract wins against Rheinmetall in land systems. Would show whether a newly public KNDS is taking European land-systems business from Rheinmetall.

Questions people ask
Is Rheinmetall profitable in 2026?
Yes. Rheinmetall posted FY2025 operating result of €1.841 billion (18.5% margin) on €9.935 billion sales, and Q1 2026 operating profit rose 17% to €224 million on €1.938 billion sales, per its March and May 2026 financial reports.
Could AI replace Rheinmetall's business?
No. Rheinmetall's core is physical manufacturing of ammunition, armor, vehicles and ships, which AI cannot replicate. It instead builds AI into its own certified products like the RV-005 interceptor drone unveiled 26 March 2026, while CEO Papperger insists on human-in-the-loop lethal decisions as of June 2026.
Who is Rheinmetall's biggest competitor?
KNDS and Leonardo in land systems, and ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) in naval, which beat Rheinmetall/NVL to Germany's F126 frigate replacement contract on 24 June 2026. KNDS is also pursuing a dual Frankfurt-Paris IPO valued near €15 billion as of June 2026.
Is Rheinmetall a safe company to join right now?
Financially it is strong, with a €73 billion order backlog as of Q1 2026 and Baa1 Moody's rating with positive outlook. However, a fatal explosion at its Expal Murcia munitions plant triggered a criminal investigation reported 2 June 2025, raising safety concerns at manufacturing sites.
Is Rheinmetall laying off workers?
No mass layoffs reported; headcount is shifting due to portfolio changes. Continuing-operations headcount was 28,815 at Q1 2026, down about 2.4% year over year mainly from reclassifying the automotive Power Systems unit (~6,250 employees) as discontinued ahead of its sale to AEQUITA.
Who owns Rheinmetall AG?
Rheinmetall AG is a publicly traded, widely held company on Germany's DAX 40 index since March 2023, with no controlling parent shareholder. Market capitalization was around €47.3 billion as of 24 July 2026.
