The call

Ribbon holds onto carriers through compliance and integration lock-in while its core voice market shrinks and Oracle sits ahead in share.

Ribbon sells software and hardware that telephone companies use to route calls and manage networks. It is hard to replace because phone companies need rock-solid reliability and Ribbon has spent years building deep connections into their systems, but Oracle already owns the biggest piece of this business and Cisco and AudioCodes are strong competitors too. The real question is whether Ribbon's new AI-powered tools (like Acumen and cloud services on Amazon Web Services) will actually sell fast enough to make up for its old products losing customers. Right now the company is getting smaller every quarter, and the new products have not yet shown up in the earnings yet.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. Ribbon is positioning AI as a growth lever (Acumen AIOps, Salesforce Agentforce voice routing), not yet as a threat eating its business. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Oracle Communications. Oracle already leads the eSBC market with about 19.9% share, competing directly for the same shrinking carrier contracts as Ribbon. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. 1,212 patents, deep OSS/BSS integration into carrier networks, and 1,000+ sticky customers make ripping Ribbon out costly.
