The call

SAS turned a profit again after bankruptcy, but its next chapter gets written mostly by Air France-KLM once that deal closes.

SAS operates flights across Scandinavia and Europe, using airport slots in busy Nordic hubs and loyalty memberships as key strengths. However, these advantages aren't unique to SAS: Norwegian Air Shuttle already ranks higher in customer satisfaction in some Nordic markets, and any airline can build loyalty programs. The biggest unknown is whether SAS's 2025 profit improvement will stick around or fade when fuel prices spike and labor costs rise again, plus whether Air France-KLM's acquisition closes smoothly in late 2026 and doesn't create conflicts in overlapping routes.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI helps SAS with pricing, scheduling, and customer service, but no AI product replaces flying planes between Nordic cities. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Air France-KLM. Air France-KLM is buying out other shareholders to hit 60.5% control, aiming to close H2 2026, which folds SAS into its network on someone else's terms. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. Airport slots at congested Nordic hubs plus the Air Operator Certificate, SkyTeam ties, and 8M+ EuroBonus members lock in flyers even as ownership changes.

Questions people ask
Is SAS Scandinavian Airlines profitable in 2026?
SAS turned around financially: FY2025 (Nov 2024 to Oct 2025) EBIT was SEK 3,030m versus an operating loss of SEK 2,111m in FY2024, on revenue of SEK 49,106m and 28.3 million passengers, up 12% year over year, per its FY25 annual report.
Who owns SAS Scandinavian Airlines now?
Post-2024 restructuring, SAS was owned by Castlelake (~32%), the Danish state (~26%), Air France-KLM (19.9%) and Lind Invest (~8.6%). On 4 July 2025 Air France-KLM announced buying out Castlelake and Lind Invest to reach 60.5% control, targeted to close H2 2026.
Did SAS go bankrupt?
Yes, SAS filed for U.S. Chapter 11 bankruptcy in July 2022 and exited on 28 August 2024 with a roughly $1.2 billion recapitalization, after which it also switched alliances from Star Alliance to SkyTeam effective 1 September 2024.
Is SAS a safe company to join for a job in 2026?
SAS looks moderately safe: FY2025 average headcount rose 6% to 9,075 FTEs alongside a turnaround to SEK 3,030m EBIT, but fuel-price shocks forced roughly 1,000 flight cuts in April 2026 and a Norwegian cabin-crew strike was narrowly averted in June 2026, showing real operational volatility.
Who is SAS Scandinavian Airlines' biggest competitor?
Norwegian Air Shuttle is the closest Nordic rival, outranking SAS on brand consideration in Denmark and on overall Nordic satisfaction per YouGov's 2026 tracking, while SAS still leads consideration in Sweden and Norway; Finnair dominates Finland with 52.4% consideration.
Could AI replace SAS Scandinavian Airlines' workforce?
Unlikely for flight operations: SAS's Air Operator Certificate, airport slots, and unionized pilot/cabin crew are regulated and physical, not automatable. AI is used only in back-office areas like EuroBonus loyalty-fraud detection via Microsoft Azure Machine Learning and CRM targeting via SAS Institute analytics, per vendor case studies.
