The call

Shiru has shipped real ingredients and landed a major distribution partner, but without exclusivity or fresh capital, it remains one AI vendor among several that bigger players could replace.

Shiru uses artificial intelligence to find new proteins for food and ingredients that are faster and cheaper to make than traditional methods. The company has already sold products like OleoPro and uPro and partnered with Ingredion, a huge ingredient supplier with 18,000 customers in 120 countries. However, this kind of AI discovery is becoming easier for others to copy: companies like Nuritas and Alpine Bio are doing similar work, and big ingredient makers like ADM, Cargill, and IFF could build their own AI tools instead of relying on startups. Shiru has only about $36 million in total funding and has not shown it can make money on its own. The biggest question is whether Ingredion will lock in an exclusive deal with Shiru or instead shop around to other AI companies and build their own tools, which would make Shiru's partnership much less valuable.

Why
01
AI pressure: Nuritas, Alpine Bio, and other AI protein-discovery startups. Rivals run similar AI screening on proteins, threatening to commoditize Shiru's discovery edge before it locks in customers. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Ingredion, ADM, Cargill, IFF, DSM-Firmenich. Ingredion and peers sample multiple AI-ingredient startups at once and could build discovery in-house, leaving Shiru swappable. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. A 77 million-sequence protein database plus commercial-scale manufacturing with GreenLab and Ingredion's 18,000-customer reach.
What would change this call
Shiru announces a new equity round or bridge financing within 6-12 months. Confirms whether investors still back the company at flat, up, or down terms after 20 months without a raise.
Ingredion converts its research MOU with Shiru into an exclusive or committed revenue deal, or instead signs more AI-ingredient vendors. Shows whether Shiru becomes a locked-in supplier or stays one of several vendors Ingredion is sampling.
A named retail product using OleoPro or uPro appears on store shelves with a disclosed brand by end of 2026. Verifies the CEO's claim of imminent commercial traction beyond research partnerships.
Key numbers
  • $36M total funding raised (2024-11-12)
  • 77M curated protein sequences in database (2025-11-10)
  • 18,000 customers reachable via Ingredion deal (2026-03-18)
Named risks
  • No new funding round disclosed since Nov 2024 Series B, runway pressure at typical 18-24 month burn. Severity: high
  • Ingredion partnership (Mar 2026) is a non-exclusive research MOU, not committed exclusive revenue. Severity: high
  • AI protein-discovery layer commoditizing as Nuritas and Alpine Bio run similar platforms. Severity: medium
  • No audited or company-disclosed revenue figure exists, financial opacity for investors and partners. Severity: medium

Questions people ask
Is Shiru profitable in 2026?
No audited revenue or profit figure has been disclosed. In Nov 2024 the CEO said OleoPro and uPro would generate revenue that quarter, but as of 2026 no confirmed profitability exists and third-party revenue estimates conflict.
Who owns Shiru?
Shiru is privately held and founder-led by CEO Dr. Jasmin Hume, who founded it in 2019. It is venture-backed with about $36M total disclosed funding through a Nov 2024 $16M Series B led by S2G Ventures; no acquisition or IPO has occurred.
Could AI replace Shiru's business?
Shiru's core product IS an AI discovery tool, and that screening layer is commoditizing fast as rivals Nuritas and Alpine Bio run similar AI-protein-discovery playbooks. Shiru's defense is its curated 77-million-sequence database and wet-lab validation, per Nov 2025 reporting.
Who is Shiru's biggest competitor?
Nuritas (Ireland, ~$75M raised, AI peptide platform 'Magnifier') and Alpine Bio (San Francisco, selected for Mondelez's CoLab Tech 2026 accelerator in June 2026) are the closest AI-protein-discovery rivals competing for the same ingredient-giant partnerships.
Does Shiru have real products on the market?
Yes. OleoPro (structured-fat oleogel) and uPro (potato-protein emulsifier alternative) reached commercial-scale production in 2025 at thousands of metric tons annually, per an April 28, 2025 vegconomist report, alongside a GreenLab manufacturing partnership.
What is Shiru's deal with Ingredion?
In March 2026 Shiru signed a global R&D collaboration with Ingredion, giving potential access to Ingredion's 18,000 customers in 120 countries for AI-discovered proteins and prebiotics. The deal is a research partnership, not yet an exclusive or committed revenue agreement.
