The call

Siltronic sits in a small club of wafer makers protected by years-long qualification hurdles, but a new Singapore fab's depreciation and simultaneous capacity additions from rivals are keeping it in the red.

Siltronic makes ultra-pure silicon wafers for computer chips and is one of five major global suppliers. It is hard to replace because customers spend years testing and qualifying new wafer suppliers, and building a factory costs over a billion euros, but right now Siltronic is the smallest and least diversified of the five, and GlobalWafers, SK Siltron, and SUMCO are all building new factories at the same time, which is flooding the market and crushing prices. The company is losing tens of millions per quarter and recently had to raise emergency cash, so the key question is whether artificial intelligence demand for advanced chips will finally push wafer prices back up when customer contracts renew later this year, or whether the price collapse from too much supply will keep squeezing Siltronic until it becomes a takeover target.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI is a demand driver here, not a disruptor: HBM and DRAM growth could lift wafer volume, but pricing gains are not yet visible. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: GlobalWafers, SK Siltron, SUMCO. All three rivals are adding 300mm capacity through 2026-2027 (Novara, Sherman, Michigan), threatening to keep wafer prices flat as Siltronic tries to recover. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. Multi-year fab qualification and long-term supply agreements with prepayments lock in customers and keep new entrants out.
What would change this call
Siltronic Q2 2026 earnings (due July 30, 2026) show LTA wafer pricing trend. Reveals whether AI/HBM demand is lifting prices or just volume while margins stay compressed.
Whether Siltronic announces a second dilutive capital raise in H2 2026. Would confirm balance-sheet stress deepening beyond the €273M June 2026 raise.
GlobalWafers Sherman, Texas fab and SK Siltron Michigan fab capacity coming online through 2027. More industry-wide 300mm supply landing just as Siltronic tries to recover pricing.

Questions people ask
Is Siltronic profitable in 2026?
No. Siltronic posted a Q1 2026 net loss of €57.7 million (EPS -€1.92) as of March 31, 2026, and its February 12, 2026 guidance says FY2026 EBIT will be "significantly below" 2025's already negative EBIT, driven by €490-520 million depreciation from its new Singapore fab.
Could AI replace Siltronic's manufacturing?
No. Siltronic's core process, crystal growth and wafer polishing, is physical materials manufacturing not automatable by generative AI. Instead AI is a demand tailwind: CEO Michael Heckmeier said on February 12, 2026 that "AI-driven end markets are clearly supporting our 300mm volume."
Who owns Siltronic?
As of July 16, 2026, Wacker Chemie AG holds 23.83%, HAL Investments B.V. holds 15.10%, Sino-American Silicon Products (GlobalWafers' parent) holds 13.67%, and free float is 47.40%, per Siltronic's IR factsheet.
Who is Siltronic's biggest competitor?
Siltronic is the smallest of five major 300mm silicon wafer producers, alongside Shin-Etsu, SUMCO, GlobalWafers and SK Siltron. All four rivals are expanding 300mm capacity simultaneously through 2027, including GlobalWafers' Novara, Italy plant opened October 2025 and SK Siltron's ~$3.6bn Michigan plant.
Why did GlobalWafers' takeover of Siltronic fail?
GlobalWafers' attempted acquisition of Siltronic, valued between €3.7 billion and €4.4 billion, collapsed in early 2022 after it failed to secure German government regulatory approval, per Wikipedia's account of the deal.
Did Siltronic recently raise capital, and why?
Yes. On June 15, 2026 Siltronic raised €273 million through an accelerated bookbuild of 3 million new shares (10% of share capital) at €91, a roughly 7% discount, to strengthen its balance sheet amid rising Singapore-fab capex and depreciation, per Hengeler Mueller's June 25, 2026 deal summary.
