The call

S&S sits third among the Big Five, profitable and antitrust-protected from merger, with its next test being a new Amazon-trained CEO and an unresolved AI policy gap.

Simon & Schuster buys books from authors, edits them, prints and sells them to bookstores and online. Amazon has tried to muscle in for 15 years by starting its own publishing and audiobook businesses, but bookstores and literary agents won't work with Amazon the way they work with S&S, so Amazon never got far. The real pressure now comes from two places: AI can narrate audiobooks cheaper than hiring voice actors (Audible is already doing this), and S&S had a fact-checking failure in May 2026 that other publishers didn't, which raises questions about whether the company is ready for AI content risks. What changes the picture most: the new CEO came from Amazon and thinks like a cost-cutter, not a book person, so editors and writers might leave, taking the value with them.

Why
01
AI pressure: Audible AI narration and translation tools. AI narration cuts audiobook costs but squeezes S&S's audio margins, and a May 2026 fact-check scandal exposed quality gaps. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Amazon, via Amazon Publishing and Audible. Amazon has sold books and audio direct to readers for 15+ years without breaking S&S's hold on bestseller shelf space and author deals. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. Exclusive author contracts, owned backlist IP, and bookstore and agent relationships Amazon has not replicated.
What would change this call
Key editors leaving S&S within 12 months of Greg Greeley's March 2026 CEO start. Would show Amazon-style culture clashing with editorial staff and destabilizing retention.
S&S publishing a formal AI-use or fact-checking policy in 2026. Would show S&S closing the gap versus other Big Five publishers on AI governance.
KKR announcing a dividend recapitalization or confirmed sale process for S&S. Would show private equity extracting value or moving toward an exit.

Questions people ask
Is Simon & Schuster profitable?
In its last publicly disclosed year, 2022, Simon & Schuster reported revenue of $1.177 billion, up 18.5% year over year, with operating income of about $248 million, roughly a 21% margin. It has not released public financials since KKR took it private on October 30, 2023.
Who owns Simon & Schuster now?
KKR has owned Simon & Schuster since October 30, 2023, when it closed a $1.62 billion cash acquisition from Paramount Global, making S&S the only Big Five publisher not owned by a diversified media or education conglomerate.
Could AI replace Simon & Schuster's editors or writers?
Unlikely for core curation, but exposure is real elsewhere: a May 2026 S&S nonfiction title by Steven Rosenbaum was found by the New York Times to contain AI-fabricated quotes, and as of March 2026 S&S was the only Big Five house without a published AI-use policy.
Who is Simon & Schuster's biggest competitor?
Penguin Random House, which held 38% of Big Five hardcover bestseller slots in 2025 versus S&S's 13%, per Publishers Weekly data from January 2026. A 2020 PRH bid to buy S&S for $2.175 billion was blocked on antitrust grounds in October 2022.
Has Amazon managed to bypass publishers like Simon & Schuster?
Not on the frontlist: bookstores and agents have refused to give Amazon Publishing imprints shelf placement for over 15 years. Amazon's pressure point is instead audiobooks, where its Audible unit controls about 70% of UK audiobook retail sales as of June 2025.
Did the Anthropic AI lawsuit affect Simon & Schuster?
Anthropic's $1.5 billion settlement with authors and publishers, covering roughly 500,000 works at about $3,000 each, received final approval July 21, 2026. It preserved the underlying fair-use ruling for training on lawfully acquired books, a template relevant to all Big Five publishers including S&S.
