The call

Weibo's ad business is stable and profitable for now, but a $1B court judgment against parent Sina and steady attention loss to Douyin and Xiaohongshu sit unresolved.

Sina Corp owns Weibo, a Chinese social media platform where people discuss news and current events. It makes about 1.76 billion dollars per year with healthy profits, but the number of people using it is dropping slowly. Weibo is different from WeChat (which is more for messaging) and competes with Douyin (a short-video app owned by ByteDance with 750 million daily users) and Xiaohongshu (a lifestyle and shopping app), both of which are taking advertising money and user attention away. The real question is not whether Weibo's business survives the next few years, it probably does, but whether a one-billion-dollar legal judgment against Sina's parent company gets enforced, which could change what Weibo is actually worth to investors.

Why
01
AI pressure: Douyin's AI-driven content ranking and ad targeting. Douyin's AI algorithms already hold attention and target ads better, while Weibo has delayed its own AI-generated ad rollout over public acceptance concerns. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: ByteDance (Douyin) and Xiaohongshu. Douyin's 750M+ DAU and Xiaohongshu's lifestyle discovery feed both compete directly for the same ad budgets and user time as Weibo. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Weibo's real-name, government-sanctioned public discourse role gives it a regulatory niche Douyin and Xiaohongshu don't occupy the same way.

  • Non-GAAP operating margin compression to 28-30% from 33% signals rising costs or pricing pressure. Severity: medium
  • AI-generated ad commercialization delayed pending public acceptance, slowing new revenue streams. Severity: low
  • State golden share via CIIF creates political dependency and potential regulatory intervention risk. Severity: medium

Questions people ask
Is Sina Corp profitable in 2026?
Sina's main asset Weibo posted FY2025 net income of $439.8M on $1.76B revenue, but Q1 2026 net income fell to $34.7M from $107.0M a year earlier as non-GAAP operating margin compressed to 28% from 33%, as of 2026-03-31.
Is Sina Corp doing layoffs?
Revelio Labs data shows Sina Corp headcount fell from 3,551 in 2023 to 3,432 as of December 2025, a 3.3% decline, with about 87.6% of staff based in China.
Could AI replace Weibo or Sina Corp?
Weibo deploys AI for ad targeting, bidding, and creative generation, and launched its Zhisou AI search product in 2025 with tens of millions of users by March 2026, but management says its moat is the proprietary social graph AI cannot replicate.
Who owns Sina Corp now?
Sina went private on 2021-03-22 via a $2.59-2.6 billion merger led by Chairman Charles Chao's New Wave MMXV Limited; the state-run China Internet Investment Fund also holds a 1% golden share acquired for about $1.5 million.
Who is Weibo's biggest competitor?
Douyin, ByteDance's short-video app with over 750 million daily active users as of 2025-2026, and Xiaohongshu, estimated at $4.8 billion revenue in 2024, are cited as the main threats eroding Weibo's ad share and attention.
Is Weibo losing users?
Weibo's monthly active users declined from 567 million in December 2025 to 562 million in March 2026, with average daily active users at 254 million, attributed by management to deliberate channel-budget rationalization.
