The call

Square Enix's franchises are safe from AI and rivals; the near-term story is an activist investor pushing for change and a Western restructuring that's still working itself out.

Square Enix makes and publishes video games, including some of the world's most recognizable franchises: Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, and the online game Final Fantasy XIV. These games have sold hundreds of millions of copies over decades, which is hard for competitors like Microsoft or Sony to copy or replace because they require years to build and have devoted fan bases. The company is profitable and likely to survive the next few years, but it is laying off workers and moving development from the West back to Japan, which is causing tension with shareholders and creates uncertainty for employees in Western offices.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI tools speed up animation and QA work at Square Enix, but nobody is using a chatbot to replace Dragon Quest or Final Fantasy. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: None apparent. No single big company is going after Square Enix's core franchises; the real pressure is coming from inside, via activist shareholder 3D Investment Partners. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. People buy Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest because of the name, not because a platform forces them to; that owned IP and FFXIV's subscriber base are hard to copy.
