The call

The product lives on inside Amplitude, but the team that built it is gone, rivals are circling, and the next earnings call will show whether customers are staying.

Statsig built software to help companies run experiments and test features safely using statistics. It was acquired by OpenAI in September 2025 and then transferred to Amplitude, a public company, in May 2026. The company now faces direct attacks from Datadog (which bought a close rival called Eppo), LaunchDarkly, and Optimizely, plus the broader threat that AI tools are starting to automate the statistics and dashboard work that analysts and product managers used to do by hand. The one thing that could change the picture is whether Amplitude can successfully combine Statsig's experiment tools with its own customer data platform so customers do not see a reason to switch to a competitor.

Why
01
AI pressure: OpenAI (absorbed the founding team) and AI copilots automating experiment setup and analysis. OpenAI took the people who built this, and AI tools now automate the manual experiment-config work Statsig used to sell. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Datadog (via Eppo acquisition), LaunchDarkly, Optimizely, and Amplitude itself. Datadog bought Eppo for $220M and rivals are actively pitching customers to leave, citing the founding team's exit to OpenAI. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Deep SDK and data-layer integration into customer codebases makes ripping Statsig out costly, even without the original team.
What would change this call
Amplitude's Aug 12, 2026 earnings call discloses Statsig ARR and net retention. Shows whether Statsig customers are staying or churning under Amplitude ownership.
Optimizely, LaunchDarkly, or Datadog/Eppo announce named customer wins previously on Statsig. Confirms rivals are actively converting Statsig's customer base.
Amplitude reports completion status of Statsig data-layer integration by end of Q3 2026. Indicates whether Statsig survives as a working sub-brand or dissolves into Amplitude.
Key numbers
  • $1.1B all-stock OpenAI acquisition price (Sep 2025)
  • ~$16M incremental ARR to Amplitude after handoff (May 2026)
  • $220M Datadog paid for rival Eppo (2025)
Named risks
  • Founding engineering team moved to OpenAI, leaving Amplitude to maintain the statistical engine. Severity: high
  • Active customer poaching by Optimizely, LaunchDarkly, and Datadog/Eppo during transition instability. Severity: high
  • Regulatory approval status of the original OpenAI-Statsig deal inconsistently reported across sources. Severity: medium
  • Core experimentation workflows (significance testing, dashboards) increasingly automatable by AI tools. Severity: medium
  • Headcount and ARR tracking inconsistent post-split, obscuring true retention trend. Severity: low

Questions people ask
Is Statsig still an independent company in 2026?
No. OpenAI acquired Statsig for about $1.1B all-stock in September 2025, then in May 2026 the Statsig brand, platform, and customer base were transferred to Amplitude (NASDAQ: AMPL) while the founding team stayed at OpenAI, per Amplitude's May 5, 2026 earnings materials.
Who owns Statsig now?
As of May 2026, Amplitude operates the Statsig brand, product, and customer base under a partnership with OpenAI. Roughly 50 Amplitude employees run the platform. The original founding team, including CEO Vijaye Raji, remained at OpenAI after its September 2025 acquisition.
Is Statsig profitable?
No profitability figures have been disclosed. Statsig reported about $40M ARR at its May 6, 2025 Series C round ($1.1B valuation). Amplitude's Q1 2026 ARR was $374M company-wide, but Statsig-specific profitability has not been separately reported.
Could AI replace Statsig's core product?
Partially exposed. Core tasks like statistical significance testing and dashboard generation are increasingly automatable by AI copilots, though Statsig's SDK footprint and warehouse-native integrations create switching costs, per an Amplitude/Optimizely dispute reported May 6, 2026.
Who is Statsig's biggest competitor?
Datadog, which acquired rival Eppo for $220M in 2025 after earlier exploring a Statsig acquisition, per a May 6, 2025 Fortune report. LaunchDarkly and Optimizely are also direct rivals actively targeting Statsig customers as of May 2026.
How much did OpenAI pay for Statsig?
OpenAI announced an all-stock acquisition of Statsig valued at roughly $1.1B on September 2, 2025, matching its prior private valuation. Founder Vijaye Raji became OpenAI's CTO of Applications as part of the deal, per TechCrunch.
