The call

Supercell's old games still print money, but its new titles keep failing and its ownership sits in political limbo.

Supercell makes popular smartphone games like Clash of Clans that keep printing money, generating about €2.65 billion in yearly revenue. The company is owned by Tencent, a huge Chinese tech firm, which makes it easy for customers to switch to games from competitors like King or Playrix if Supercell stops releasing fresh hits, and Supercell has not launched a successful new game since 2018. The biggest question is whether the U.S. government will force Tencent to sell Supercell as part of a broader crackdown on Chinese ownership of American tech, which would leave the company's future ownership and ability to invest unclear.

Why
01
AI pressure: AI-assisted dev tools used by rivals like Scopely and Dream Games. AI-sped prototyping lets rivals flood app stores with new titles while Supercell's own AI lab has yet to ship a hit. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Tencent (parent and global competitor), plus Scopely, King, Dream Games, Playrix. Rivals keep landing new hits in the West and Tencent itself publishes competing mobile games worldwide. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Five long-running franchises with about 290 million monthly players and years of live-ops data keep cash flowing even without a new hit.

Questions people ask
Is Supercell profitable in 2025?
Yes. Supercell reported 2025 non-GAAP revenue of €2.65bn, down 4% year over year, with EBITDA of €932m, up 6% YoY, as of December 31, 2025, per Supercell's own reporting cited by GamesIndustry.biz on 2026-02-10.
Who owns Supercell?
Tencent controls Supercell through the Halti S.A. consortium, holding roughly 51.2% of voting rights since October 2019 and an estimated 84% total equity as of 2026. Tencent originally bought about 81.4% from SoftBank in 2016 for $8.6bn.
Has Supercell had layoffs?
Supercell absorbed Space Ape Games in late 2024, keeping about 70 staff in a new London office while laying off around 30. Overall headcount grew 30% in 2025 to 890 Supercellians, so layoffs were isolated rather than company-wide.
Could AI replace Supercell's game studio?
Unlikely soon. Supercell is using AI offensively via its internal AI Innovation Lab (expanded to Helsinki, San Francisco and Tokyo by March 2026) rather than being disrupted, and its proprietary Titan engine plus five-franchise player data are not easily AI-replicable as of April 2026.
Who is Supercell's biggest competitor?
In new-title races, Scopely, Dream Games, King and Playrix have outperformed Supercell in Western in-app-purchase rankings, with Supercell falling to 9th place in Q1 2025 per AppMagic-based reporting. Parent Tencent is also a much larger global mobile publisher.
Is Supercell at risk from a Tencent divestiture order?
Yes, this is live. CFIUS was reviewing forcing Tencent to divest Western gaming stakes including Supercell, Riot Games and Epic Games, with deliberations timed near a Trump-Xi summit around March 31 to April 2, 2026, and no resolution reported as of mid-2026.
