The call

Superscript has the licenses to stay in the room, but a bigger broker with the same licenses is already outgrowing it.

Superscript is a British insurance broker that uses AI to help small businesses get quotes and coverage quickly. It holds real advantages that pure AI startups cannot easily copy: a government license to act as a broker, relationships with insurance carriers, and connections to banks and business platforms that distribute its services. However, these same advantages belong to Simply Business, which is much larger (owned by Travelers, serving over 1 million customers) and can deploy AI just as well. The real threat is not new AI companies but bigger, licensed competitors who can undercut Superscript on price as AI makes underwriting routine work. Recent stress signals matter: no new funding since early 2023, the team shrunk from 239 people to 100-150, and the entire executive leadership turned over in 2025, with a co-founder departing. One thing could change the picture: meaningful new funding within the next year, which would show investors still believe in a turnaround.

Why
01
AI pressure: AI-native underwriting platforms like FurtherAI. AI tools now price and underwrite policies directly, squeezing the quoting layer Superscript's whole model runs on. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Simply Business (owned by Travelers). Simply Business has 1M+ customers and Travelers' backing, and can enter any specialty niche Superscript carves out. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Its Lloyd's broker license and bank/platform tie-ins with Amazon Business, TSB, and Cashplus give it distribution rivals must rebuild.
What would change this call
Superscript announces a new priced funding round (Series C or later) within 12 months. Would show investors still back the turnaround after 3.5 years of funding silence.
Further exits from Superscript's C-suite through 2026-2027. Would show leadership instability continuing after 2025's complete turnover.
Simply Business or Zego launches products targeting Superscript's specialty niches (e.g., contractors, gig workers). Would show the larger incumbent moving directly into Superscript's remaining differentiated space.

Questions people ask
Is Superscript profitable in 2026?
No profitability figures are public. Superscript claims double-digit revenue growth and rising GWP as of March 2026, but third-party revenue estimates range from $14.1M (ZoomInfo) to $34.2M (Growjo, 2022), with no audited profit data disclosed.
Has Superscript raised new funding recently?
No priced round has been announced since its £45M/$54M Series B closed in January 2023, led by BHL UK. As of mid-2026 that is over 3.5 years of funding silence despite public 'next phase of growth' messaging in March 2026.
Who owns Superscript?
Superscript is a private, venture-backed UK company, not publicly traded. It has raised roughly $72M/£65M total across five rounds since 2017, with investors including BHL UK, The Hartford, Concentric and Seedcamp; no acquisition has been reported.
Could AI replace Superscript's insurance brokering?
Not entirely. AI is commoditizing self-serve quoting and underwriting, the layer most exposed industry-wide, but Superscript's Lloyd's of London broker license (first UK insurtech to hold one) and multi-carrier relationships with AXA, Beazley and RSA are regulatory moats AI cannot replicate.
Who is Superscript's biggest competitor?
Simply Business, owned by Travelers, reports over 1 million customers and 900,000+ active policies as of July 2026, dwarfing Superscript's estimated $14-34M revenue and roughly 100-150 employees, making it the dominant UK SME insurance incumbent.
Has Superscript's headcount grown or shrunk?
Estimates diverge, but headcount appears down from a 2022 peak of roughly 239 employees (Growjo) to somewhere between 77 (Seedtable, June 2026) and 109 (LinkedIn, March 2026), even as the company opened a new Glasgow hub in March 2026.
