The call

Teladoc is a large, cash-generating operator whose core mental health business is shrinking while Amazon, Walmart and insurers build their own virtual care around it.

Teladoc connects patients with doctors and therapists online and made $2.53 billion in revenue last year. It is hard to replace because doctors and insurance rules create real barriers, but it is getting easier for large competitors like Amazon, Walmart, Kaiser, and Hims to build their own telehealth services or copy what Teladoc does. The company's counseling division (BetterHelp) is shrinking, and revenue overall is falling, which means the biggest question right now is whether Teladoc can stop the decline at its core medical services business when it reports earnings in late July 2026, because if it cannot, the company's value as an investment could drop a lot further.

Why
01
AI pressure: AI-driven intake, triage and clinical documentation tools. AI cuts the cost of running visits and chat therapy, squeezing what Teladoc can charge rather than replacing the clinicians outright. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Amazon Clinic, Walmart Better Care Services, Kaiser and insurers building in-house virtual care, Hims & Hers on the consumer side. Amazon and Walmart now offer virtual care directly, insurers build their own, and Teladoc has become a vendor inside Walmart's platform rather than the owner. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Licensing, clinician networks and payer integrations that took years to build still make Teladoc hard to fully replace overnight.

Questions people ask
Is Teladoc Health profitable in 2026?
No. Teladoc posted a Q1 2026 net loss of $63.8 million ($0.36/share), narrower than the $93.0 million loss a year earlier, and FY2025 net loss per share was $1.14 on $2.53 billion revenue, down 1.5% YoY, as of March 31, 2026.
Is Teladoc Health laying off employees?
Teladoc cut about 300 jobs (6%) in January 2023 and about 200 jobs (5%) in January 2024. Headcount has since been roughly flat, at 5,600 employees as of December 31, 2025, with Q1 2026 restructuring/severance charges of $12.0 million.
Could AI replace Teladoc Health's doctors and therapists?
Not entirely. AI tools like Teladoc's Pulse engine handle 20,000+ chat sessions monthly and save about 15 minutes of documentation per therapy session as of April 29, 2026, but prescribing and diagnosis still require its 6,000+ licensed BetterHelp providers due to regulatory liability.
Who is Teladoc Health's biggest competitor?
Amwell is the closest direct platform rival at roughly $260 million in annual revenue, far smaller than Teladoc's $2.53 billion FY2025 revenue. Hims & Hers is increasingly cited as taking consumer share, while Walmart and Amazon are building competing virtual-care access as of 2026.
Is BetterHelp declining under Teladoc Health?
Yes. BetterHelp revenue fell 9% YoY to $218.4 million in Q1 2026 (ended March 31, 2026), with cash-pay users down 9% YoY to about 361,000; US users declined mid-teens, partly offset by international growth, prompting a pivot to insurance reimbursement.
Who owns Teladoc Health?
Teladoc Health is publicly traded on the NYSE under ticker TDOC with no parent company. It IPO'd in July 2015 at $19/share; as of July 22, 2026 its market capitalization was roughly $1.75 billion with shares trading around $9 to $9.65.
